sifatida
As, In the Role of
Sifatida means as in the sense of in the role of: U tarjimon sifatida qatnashdi (He took part as an interpreter). With jobs in everyday speech, people often say boʻlib: U oʻqituvchi boʻlib ishlaydi (She works as a teacher).
How It Works
Sifatida is sifat (quality, capacity) with -i and -da, literally in its capacity. It follows a noun in its basic form:
- tarjimon sifatida (as an interpreter)
- mehmon sifatida (as a guest)
- sovgʻa sifatida (as a gift)
- misol sifatida (as an example)
Speaking from a role. At the start of a sentence it gives the role you speak from: Ota sifatida men bundan xursandman (As a father, I'm happy about this).
Jobs: boʻlib. With ishlamoq (to work), everyday Uzbek often uses boʻlib, the -(i)b form of boʻlmoq: U haydovchi boʻlib ishlaydi (He works as a driver). Sifatida is also correct there, but it sounds more formal.
As a role, not like. Kabi and -dek mean like. They compare with something else. U tarjimon kabi gapirdi means he spoke like an interpreter, perhaps without being one. Sifatida says he really had that role.
As a rule. The fixed phrase for as a rule is qoida tariqasida, not qoida sifatida. In everyday speech, people usually just say odatda (usually).

Common Mistakes
Using kabi for a real role (meant: he was the interpreter).
U tarjimon kabi qatnashdi.U tarjimon sifatida qatnashdi.Kabi means like, so the first sentence compares him with an interpreter. Use sifatida when he really had that role.
Writing sifatda instead of sifatida.
Men bu yerga mehmon sifatda keldim.Men bu yerga mehmon sifatida keldim. The postposition needs the possessive -i: sifat + -i + -da. Sifatda alone means in quality, as in yuqori sifatda (in high quality).
