اپنے آپ
Referring Back to Oneself
The action comes back to the same person → oneself.
How It Works
With a marker such as کو or سے, اپنے آپ refers back to the person involved in the action: اپنے آپ کو asks us to understand the same person as the object.
Without such a marker, the phrase can describe doing something independently. It can also mean that a thing changes on its own, without someone deliberately making it happen.
The form does not change to match a female or plural subject. Distinguish this full phrase from اپنا, اپنی, and اپنے before a possessed noun.
Examples (4)
- مریم نے اپنے آپ کو پرسکون رکھا۔
Maryam kept herself calm.
The object refers back to Maryam.
- میں نے اپنے آپ سے ایک سوال پوچھا۔
I asked myself a question.
The same person asks and receives the question.
- یہ دروازہ اپنے آپ بند ہو جاتا ہے۔
This door closes on its own.
The phrase describes an automatic event rather than a human reflexive object.
- بچے اب اپنے آپ تیار ہو جاتے ہیں۔
The children now get ready by themselves.
The phrase describes independence and stays unchanged with the plural subject.
