Reading a Chain of Izafat Links

Level 6

منصوبۂ تعمیرِ پل → a plan for building a bridge.

How It Works

First identify the main item at the beginning of the phrase. In منصوبۂ تعمیرِ پل, منصوبہ is the plan, تعمیر names the activity, and پل identifies what is being built.

Each link can express a different relation. A chain may combine a noun describing another noun with an adjective describing its neighbor. Do not assume every link means literal possession.

Long chains are frequent in titles and formal writing. When writing for clarity, an ordinary phrase or a full clause may be easier to follow. In reading, use the meaning and the surrounding sentence to resolve any ambiguity.

Examples (4)

The head is تاریخ; زبانِ اردو identifies which language’s history.

  2. شعبۂ تدریسِ اردو نے ایک نشست منعقد کی۔

The department of Urdu teaching held a session.

The chain names a department by its teaching activity and language.

  3. منصوبۂ تعمیرِ پل ابھی زیرِ غور ہے۔
