A Noun-to-Noun Izafat Phrase

Level 6

مرکزِ شہر → the center of the city.

How It Works

In شہر کا مرکز, the city comes before its center. In مرکزِ شہر, the center comes first. Izafat can express ownership, location, membership or another relation; English “of” is only a starting point.

The short linking vowel belongs after the first word. A final silent ہ can carry the hamza marker, as in دروازۂ باغ. Other endings have their own spelling conventions, which are best learned with the phrase.

The phrase can then take an ordinary postposition. Read the whole unit before interpreting a following میں, سے or کا. Izafat is common in formal language and established expressions; its choice can change the register.
