ورنہ
Otherwise or Else
Read ورنہ as referring back to what came just before.
How It Works
The first part often gives advice or an instruction. The second part explains what will happen if the person does not follow it.
The consequence need not be a threat. It can simply state a practical alternative, such as using another entrance if the first is closed.
A full conditional can express the same relation more explicitly. Make sure the omitted condition is recoverable from the previous clause.
Examples (4)
- جلدی کیجیے، ورنہ دیر ہو جائے گی۔
Please hurry, or we will be late.
The consequence follows if the request is not acted on.
- نام لکھ لیجیے، ورنہ بھول جائیں گے۔
Write down the name, or you will forget it.
The warning gives the reason to note the name.
- آج وقت ملے تو آئیے، ورنہ کل ملیں گے۔
Come today if you have time; otherwise, we will meet tomorrow.
The second clause offers a practical alternative.
- دروازہ بند کر دو، ورنہ بلی باہر نکل جائے گی۔
Close the door, or the cat will get out.
ورنہ supplies the consequence of leaving it open.
