Noun + والا / والی / والے
Identifying Something by Association
Find the head noun to choose والا, والی or والے.
How It Works
The relationship depends on the phrase. It may refer to what a shop sells, what an object contains or which feature helps you recognize it.
When the head noun is already understood, it can be left out. A phrase such as دودھ والا can refer to a milk seller, but you should learn the intended meaning in context.
When the whole phrase comes before a postposition, masculine singular والا can become والے, and an omitted plural head may require والوں.
Examples (4)
- نیلی چھت والا گھر ہمارا ہے۔
The house with the blue roof is ours.
والا agrees with the house, not its feminine roof.
- یہ جیب والی قمیص مجھے پسند ہے۔
I like this shirt with a pocket.
والی follows feminine قمیص.
- ہم نے پھولوں والے پردے خریدے۔
We bought curtains with flowers on them.
والے agrees with masculine plural پردے.
- میں نیلی چھت والے گھر میں رہتا ہوں۔
I live in the house with the blue roof.
والے is masculine singular oblique before میں.
Common Mistakes
Agreeing والا with the associated feature instead of the head noun.
نیلی چھت والی گھر ہمارا ہے۔نیلی چھت والا گھر ہمارا ہے۔گھر is the masculine head of this phrase; the feminine roof does not select والی.
