جتنا / اتنا
Comparing Equal Amounts or Degrees
State an amount once and refer to a corresponding amount.
How It Works
The first clause can establish an available, requested or needed amount. The second uses اتنا or its agreeing form to refer to that amount.
Plural countable nouns can take جتنے or جتنی. Do not select جتنا solely because the English translation says as much or as many.
This entry teaches the amount-matching construction. An adjective-only comparison such as as tall as uses a different phrase structure.
Examples (4)
- جتنا پانی چاہیے، اتنا لے لیجیے۔
Take as much water as you need.
Masculine پانی selects جتنا and اتنا.
- جتنی چینی چاہیے، اتنی ڈالیے۔
Add as much sugar as you need.
Feminine چینی selects جتنی and اتنی.
- جتنے مہمان آئیں گے، ہم اتنی کرسیاں رکھیں گے۔
We will put out as many chairs as there are guests.
جتنے agrees with masculine مہمان; اتنی agrees with feminine کرسیاں. The amounts match, but the genders differ.
- جتنی کتابیں آپ پڑھیں گے، اتنی میں بھی پڑھوں گا۔
I will read as many books as you do.
Feminine plural کتابیں selects جتنی and اتنی. The verb forms address a man respectfully and identify a male speaker.
