کہاں

Asking Where

Level 1

Use کہاں for the missing place in a sentence. It does not change for the gender of the person or object.

How It Works

میری چابی کہاں ہے؟ asks for the key's location. You could answer بیگ میں without repeating the whole sentence.

Compare بس کہاں ہے؟ and بس کہاں جا رہی ہے؟. The first asks its current location; the second asks where it is going. The verb supplies the difference.

Add سے after the question word to ask from where: آپ کہاں سے آ رہے ہیں؟. Keep the words in the order کہاں سے, not the English order from where.

Use کب for a time and کون for a person. Urdu question words usually remain inside the sentence pattern rather than all moving to its beginning.

Examples (4)

  1. میری چابی کہاں ہے؟

    Where is my key?

کہاں asks for the location of the key.

  2. بس کہاں ہے؟

    Where is the bus?

The form of “to be” gives a location question.

  3. بس کہاں جا رہی ہے؟

    Where is the bus going?

The movement verb turns this into a destination question.

  4. آپ کہاں سے آ رہے ہیں؟

    Where are you coming from?

کہاں سے asks for the starting point; this uses masculine respectful agreement.
