і / о
І and О Alternation with Closed Syllables
In Ukrainian, the vowels о and е often change to і when they move from an open syllable (ending in a vowel) to a closed syllable (ending in a consonant).
How It Works
This alternation is a hallmark of Ukrainian phonology. Historically, the loss of short vowels (known as 'jers') caused the preceding о and е to lengthen and change into і in closed syllables.
Key Conditions:
- Closed Syllable: Ends in a consonant. Vowels о and е change to і. Examples: стіл (table), вечір (evening), осінь (autumn).
- Open Syllable: Ends in a vowel. The vowel remains о or е. Examples: сто-ла, ве-чо-ра, о-се-ні.
Common Contexts:
1. Noun Declension: Seen in Nominative Subject (closed) vs. oblique cases like Genitive, Dative, or Instrumental (open, e.g., стіл → стола, столу, столом).
2. Genitive Plural: A word like шко-ла (open) loses its ending in the Genitive plural, closing the syllable: шкіл.
3. Past Tense Verbs: The masculine past tense has a zero ending (closed syllable, e.g., ніс, міг), while other forms add vowels (open syllables, e.g., несла, могли).
4. Word Derivation (Словотворення): Alternation happens when forming new words (e.g., робота → робітник, гора → гірський).
Important Exceptions:
- Pleophony: Vowel groups -оро-, -оло-, and -ере- usually do not alternate in masculine nouns (e.g., closed syllables like мороз and берег do not change to моріз or беріг). However, they frequently alternate in the genitive plural of feminine and neuter nouns (e.g., голова → голів, дорога → доріг). Four common masculine exceptions do alternate: поріг (порога), сморід (смороду), моріг (морога), and оборіг (оборога).
- Fugitive Vowels (Випадні голосні): If о or е drops out entirely when declined, it does not change to і (e.g., сон → сну).
- Inserted Vowels (Вставні голосні): Vowels that are inserted to break up consonant clusters in the Genitive plural do not change to і (e.g., вікно → вікон, казка → казок).
- Consonant Clusters: Vowels in groups like -ов-, -ор-, -ер- usually do not alternate when they are between consonants (e.g., вовк, смерть).
- Specific Suffixes: Suffixes like -очк-, -ечк-, -енк- do not alternate even when the syllable becomes closed (e.g., Genitive plural казочок, донечок).
- Neuter Nouns in -ення: In the Genitive plural, they lose their final vowel (closing the syllable), but the е does not change to і (e.g., значення → значень).
- Loanwords: Modern borrowings (директор, балкон) are stable, but older, integrated loanwords do alternate (колір → кольору, папір → паперу).
- Compound Words (Складні слова): Compound words denoting professions or mechanisms ending in -вод, -воз, -роб, -нос do not alternate (e.g., хлібороб → хлібороба). However, compound words denoting inanimate systems or objects do alternate (e.g., водопровід → водопроводу).
Examples (5)
- Мій кіт спить, але я не бачу кота.
My cat is sleeping, but I don't see the cat.
Word by Word: My cat sleeps, but I not see cat.
In 'кіт', the syllable is closed, so we use 'і'. In 'ко-та', the 'а' opens the syllable, so it reverts to 'о'.
- У кімнаті стоїть новий стіл, але я не бачу старого стола.
A new table stands in the room, but I don't see the old table.
Word by Word: In room stands new table, but I not see old table.
'Стіл' is a closed syllable (ends in 'л'). In 'сто-ла', the genitive ending 'а' opens the syllable, bringing back the 'о'.
- У нашому місті багато шкіл, але моя школа найкраща.
There are many schools in our city, but my school is the best.
Word by Word: In our city many schools, but my school best.
'Шко-ла' has an open syllable. In the genitive plural 'шкіл', the ending is removed, closing the syllable and changing 'о' to 'і'.
- Він ніс важку сумку, а вона несла легкий рюкзак.
He carried a heavy bag, and she carried a light backpack.
Word by Word: He carried heavy bag, and she carried light backpack.
In the masculine past tense 'ніс', the syllable is closed, so we use 'і'. In the feminine 'не-сла', the 'а' opens the syllable, so it reverts to 'е'.
- Це дуже складна робота, але він хороший робітник.
This is very difficult work, but he is a good worker.
Word by Word: This very difficult work, but he good worker.
The root 'робот-' has an open syllable in 'ро-бо-та'. When forming the derived noun 'робітник', the syllable becomes closed ('ро-біт-ник'), changing 'о' to 'і'.
Common Mistakes
Using 'o' in a closed syllable for native Ukrainian words.
Мій кот дуже великий.Мій кіт дуже великий.Learners often carry over the 'o' from Russian (кот) or other Slavic languages. In Ukrainian, native words must shift to 'і' in closed syllables.
Applying the rule to modern loanwords.
Я розмовляю з директіром.Я розмовляю з директором.Loanwords like 'директор' are stable and do not undergo this vowel alternation.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To understand the і/о alternation, learners must first be familiar with masculine noun structures and how case endings (like the genitive) add a vowel to the end of a word, thereby 'opening' the previously closed syllable of the stem.
