так/ні
Yes and No Answers
Так = Yes
Ні = No
In Ukrainian, answering with just one word can sometimes sound blunt. It is very common to repeat the verb from the question (an 'echo-answer') to sound more natural.
How It Works
In Ukrainian, answering a question involves more than just a binary choice. Here is how to use these particles effectively:
- Placement: Так and ні usually come at the beginning of the response, followed by a comma.
- The Echo-Answer: To sound like a native speaker, repeat the main verb. For example, instead of just saying 'Так', say 'Так, знаю' (Yes, I know).
- Negative Questions: If someone asks a negative question (e.g., 'You didn't go?'), use ні to agree with the negative state ('No, I didn't'). To contradict it and say you actually did, it is best to simply state the positive verb ('Ходив') rather than using 'так', which can be ambiguous.
- Double Negation: Ukrainian uses negative concord. When you use negative words like 'ніколи' (never) or 'ніхто' (nobody), you must still use не before the verb. For example: 'Ні, я нічого не знаю'.
- Distinction from 'не': Do not confuse ні (the standalone 'No') with не (the particle used to negate a specific verb).
- Casual Variations: In informal settings, you might hear ага (yeah) or та ні (well, no/not really).
Examples (4)
- — Ти будеш чай? — Так, буду.
— Will you have tea? — Yes, I will.
Word by Word: — You will tea? — Yes, [I] will.
This shows a standard 'echo-answer' where the verb 'буду' is repeated for a natural sound.
- — Вона вже вдома? — Ні, її ще немає.
— Is she home already? — No, she isn't here yet.
Word by Word: — She already at-home? — No, her yet there-is-not.
Using 'ні' followed by the negative existence construction 'немає'.
- — Ти не бачив мої ключі? — Ні, не бачив.
— Haven't you seen my keys? — No, I haven't.
Word by Word: — You not saw my keys? — No, not saw.
When answering a negative question, 'ні' confirms the negative state.
- — Ти знаєш Марка? — Знаю.
— Do you know Mark? — I do.
Word by Word: — You know Mark? — [I] know.
In many cases, Ukrainians omit 'так' entirely and just use the verb.
Common Mistakes
Answering a negative question with 'так', which can be heard two ways.
Different Meaning— Ти не ходив? — Так.— Ти не ходив? — Ні, не ходив.'Так' can be heard as 'Yes, I went' or as 'Yes, you are right, I did not go'. To avoid confusion, Ukrainian speakers usually repeat the verb: 'Ні, не ходив' or 'Ходив'.
Confusing 'ні' (No) with 'не' (Not).
Я ні знаю.Я не знаю.Use 'ні' as a standalone answer or at the start of a sentence. Use не directly before a verb to negate the action.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To use 'так' and 'ні' effectively, a learner needs to understand how to form basic sentences using personal pronouns, the zero copula for 'to be' statements, and how to negate verbs.
- Zero present copula
Understanding that Ukrainian often omits the verb 'to be' in the present tense is necessary to understand basic 'Yes, I am...' or 'No, she is...' responses.
