ยิ่ง ... ยิ่ง

The More the More

Level 3

ยิ่ง ... ยิ่ง links two degrees, as in ‘the more…the more….’ The words in each part show what changes; the pattern alone does not prove a cause or an exact ratio.

How It Works

Two Degrees Read Together
ยิ่ง can express a greater degree. In the paired pattern, two degrees are linked: the dictionary example ยิ่งมากยิ่งดี has the reading ‘the more, the better.’ The pattern expresses the comparison; it does not establish a mathematical proportion or prove that one change causes another.

Read The Words In Each Part
ยิ่งเรียนยิ่งเก่ง links studying with ability. ยิ่งสูงยิ่งหนาว links height with coldness in the supplied reading. ยิ่งมีเงินยิ่งดี concerns having more money; มีเงิน supplies the ‘have money’ meaning. ยิ่งน้อยยิ่งดี links a smaller amount with a better result, so the English reading is ‘the less, the better.’

Notice The Complete Example With ก็
ยิ่งดึกก็ยิ่งหิว includes ก็ before the second ยิ่ง. Learn that complete construction alongside the examples without ก็. This set does not establish every subject position or a rule for inserting or deleting ก็ anywhere.

Read The Intended Task
The money card asks specifically for ‘having more money,’ using ยิ่งมีเงินยิ่งดี. The study card asks for a two-part comparison, ยิ่งเรียนยิ่งเก่ง. A single ยิ่ง also has its own degree uses, so these tasks do not ban all nouns or every phrase containing only one ยิ่ง. Compare กว่า, ขึ้น, and other degree expressions in their own complete constructions.

Examples (5)

  1. ยิ่งเรียนยิ่งเก่ง

The more you study, the smarter you become.

Word by Word: more study more smart

This complete expression links studying with greater ability. It leaves the person unstated; the surrounding context supplies a person or a general reading.

  2. ยิ่งสูงยิ่งหนาว

The higher you go, the colder it gets.

Word by Word: more high more cold

The supplied reading links being higher with being colder. The sentence alone does not establish a figurative claim about rank, pressure, or isolation.

  3. ยิ่งดึกก็ยิ่งหิว

The later it gets, the hungrier I get.

Word by Word: more late-at-night (then) more hungry

ก็ appears before the second ยิ่ง in this complete expression. The Thai leaves the hungry person unstated; ‘I’ is supplied in this English reading.

  4. ยิ่งมีเงินยิ่งดี

The more money you have, the better.

Word by Word: more have money more good

Here, มีเงิน means 'have money', so ยิ่งมีเงิน refers to having more money.

  5. ยิ่งน้อยยิ่งดี

    The less, the better.

Word by Word: more little more good

With น้อย (little or few), ยิ่งน้อย means 'the less' or 'the fewer'.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving out มี when you mean 'having more money'.

    ยิ่งเงินยิ่งดี
    ยิ่งมีเงินยิ่งดี

For the intended meaning 'The more money you have, the better', use มี (to have): ยิ่งมีเงินยิ่งดี. The noun เงิน alone names money, so ยิ่งเงินยิ่งดี does not clearly express that meaning.

  • Leaving the two-part comparison unclear.

    ยิ่งเรียนเก่ง
    ยิ่งเรียนยิ่งเก่ง

For the intended meaning 'The more you study, the better you become', mark both parts with ยิ่ง: ยิ่งเรียนยิ่งเก่ง. A single ยิ่ง can emphasize one action or quality, so ยิ่งเรียนเก่ง does not clearly express this two-part comparison.
