มักจะ

Tends to

Level 4

Use มักจะ before the predicate to present a habit or tendency. This wording does not itself measure how often the event occurs.

How It Works

Find The Tendency
มักจะ presents a tendency. เขามักจะมาสาย describes tending to arrive late. The lunch and rain sentences make general statements about a habit and a seasonal pattern; they are illustrations, without measured population or climate data.

Read The Predicate
มักจะ comes before the predicate in these examples. The breakfast sentence puts ไม่ before กินอาหารเช้า, giving the displayed reading tends not to eat breakfast. The night-reading sentence also has เสมอ; read that added wording with the whole statement.

Compare The Requested Plan
The doctor card asks for a one-time future plan: พรุ่งนี้เขาจะไปหาหมอ. It therefore practises จะ rather than the tendency phrase มักจะ. The task does not prohibit discussing a future tendency in a different account.

Compare Whole Expressions
ชอบ, ปกติ, and complete ขี้ compounds have their own uses for liking, usual behavior, or traits. Read their examples rather than replacing one expression solely because its English gloss mentions a habit.

Examples (5)

  1. เขามักจะมาสาย

    He tends to arrive late.

Word by Word: He + tends to + come + late

The sentence presents arriving late as his tendency; it does not supply observations or a measured frequency.

  2. คนไทยมักจะกินข้าวเป็นอาหารกลางวัน

Thai people usually eat rice for lunch.

Word by Word: Person + Thai + tend to + eat + rice + be + food + middle + day

The sentence makes a general statement about a lunch habit, rather than stating that every Thai person follows it.

  3. ในฤดูร้อน ฝนมักจะตกในตอนบ่าย

In the summer, it tends to rain in the afternoon.

Word by Word: In + season + hot, + rain + tend to + fall + in + time + afternoon

The phrase can describe a tendency in weather as well as human habits. The example does not name a place whose rainfall is being measured.

  4. เขามักจะไม่กินอาหารเช้า

He tends not to eat breakfast.

Word by Word: He + tend to + not + eat + food + morning

In this sentence, ไม่ follows มักจะ and negates กินอาหารเช้า. The displayed reading is a tendency not to eat breakfast.

  5. เขามักจะอ่านหนังสือตอนกลางคืนเสมอ

He always tends to read books at night.

Word by Word: He + tend to + read + book + time + middle + night + always

The sentence also contains เสมอ. Its translation presents reading at night as a regular habit; read the whole phrase rather than assigning มักจะ alone the meaning always.

Common Mistakes

  • Put มักจะ Before มาสาย In This Sentence

    เขามาสายมักจะ
    เขามักจะมาสาย

เขามักจะมาสาย has the displayed tendency marker before มาสาย. เขามาสายมักจะ does not reproduce this complete sentence.

  • Use จะ For This One-Time Future Plan

    พรุ่งนี้เขามักจะไปหาหมอ
    พรุ่งนี้เขาจะไปหาหมอ

The task asks for the plan that he will visit the doctor tomorrow: พรุ่งนี้เขาจะไปหาหมอ. Adding มักจะ changes that requested one-time reading to a tendency. This does not forbid talking about future tendencies in other contexts.

Learn This First

To understand 'มักจะ' (tends to), you should be familiar with the basic Thai sentence structure and the use of the particle 'จะ'. Since Thai verbs don't change form to show habits, 'มักจะ' acts as a pre-verb marker to indicate that an action is a frequent tendency rather than a one-time event.
