อื่น ๆ refers to other people or things. In the list ending และอื่น ๆ, English uses “and so on.” Look at the whole noun phrase to see what the other items are.

How It Works

1. Other People And Things
คนอื่น ๆ refers to other people in the first example. ปัญหาอื่น ๆ refers to other problems that still need fixing. Context tells us which people or problems are being contrasted.

2. Follow The Displayed Order
The examples show คน + อื่น ๆ and ปัญหา + อื่น ๆ. The fruit example shows ผลไม้ + ลูก + อื่น ๆ, with ลูก as the classifier. These whole phrases provide models for this lesson.

3. Continue A List
เขาสนใจเรื่องวิทยาศาสตร์ ประวัติศาสตร์ และอื่น ๆ lists science and history, then adds “and so on.” Compare the written omission mark ฯลฯ in its own entry.

4. Compare Meanings
ต่าง ๆ expresses variety. อื่น ๆ points to other people or things. This difference does not require a rule that every use excludes one fixed set.

5. Read And Write The Repetition
Read อื่น ๆ as a repeated word. The Royal Society writing guidance places spaces around ๆ. The selected coffee task asks for one additional cup, expressed by อีกแก้ว, rather than the phrase for other cups.

    อื่น ๆ can be used with abstract nouns like 'problems' to indicate there are more of them.

    Try looking at the other fruits in the basket.

    Word by Word: try + look + fruit + classifier + other + other + in + basket + (particle)

    This shows the pattern Noun + Classifier + อื่น ๆ.

Common Mistakes

  • Placing อื่น ๆ before the noun.

    อื่น ๆ คนไปไหน
    คนอื่น ๆ ไปไหน

    In this pattern, อื่น ๆ follows คน to mean other people. Put it after the noun, as in the second sentence.

  • Using a plural phrase for one additional cup.

    ขอกาแฟแก้วอื่น ๆ
    ขอกาแฟอีกแก้ว

    For the intended request for one additional cup of coffee, use อีกแก้ว. แก้วอื่น ๆ refers to other cups as a group, so it does not clearly give that single additional-cup meaning.
