Royal Verbs
The examples use complete royal expressions for playing music, walking, eating, and running. Learn each expression with its context; a prefix alone does not determine every form for every rank.
How It Works
Read the Complete Expressions:
ทรงดนตรี describes playing music in the king example. ทรงพระดำเนิน describes walking in the queen example. ทรงวิ่ง describes running in the princess sentence. The eating example uses เสวยพระกระยาหาร without adding ทรง before เสวย.
Use Established Forms:
ทรง occurs with particular common and royal words. Do not extend a three-class formula to every noun or verb. The person’s rank and the context determine the prescribed expression. Compare the broader royal vocabulary and พระ in their own examples.
The Selected Cards:
The eating card requests the established form พระองค์เสวย. The royal-son card requests เป็นพระราชโอรส. They illustrate these whole prescribed forms, not a rule that every word with พระ behaves identically. Study the full phrase rather than adding a second honorific by guesswork.
Written Reading:
ทรง has the established standard written reading song. Compare ทร in particular words; one word’s reading does not determine every written ทร sequence.
Examples (4)
- พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวทรงดนตรี
His Majesty the King plays music.
Word by Word: His Majesty the King + royal prefix + music
ทรงดนตรี is the complete expression used here for playing music. This example does not establish that ทรง can be added to every ordinary noun.
- สมเด็จพระราชินีทรงพระดำเนิน
Her Majesty the Queen walks.
Word by Word: Her Majesty the Queen + royal prefix + royal prefix + walk
The prescribed expression ทรงพระดำเนิน describes walking here. Learn the whole expression rather than treating พระ as a freely added prefix.
- พระองค์เสวยพระกระยาหาร
He/She [Royal] eats a meal.
Word by Word: Royal pronoun + eat (royal) + royal meal
เสวย is an inherently royal verb meaning 'to eat'. Notice that it does not use the ทรง prefix.
- เจ้าหญิงทรงวิ่งในสวน
The princess runs in the garden.
Word by Word: Princess + royal prefix + run + in + garden
The sentence uses ทรง before วิ่ง to describe running in this royal context. It illustrates this complete expression rather than a rule for every person called a princess.
Common Mistakes
Use The Established Royal Eating Form.
พระองค์ทรงเสวยพระองค์เสวยFor the prescribed eating form in this comparison, choose พระองค์เสวย. เสวย is already the established royal eating verb. Do not add ทรง to this selected form; this does not define a universal productive class of every royal verb.
Use The Established Royal-Son Form.
ทรงเป็นพระราชโอรสเป็นพระราชโอรสThe prescribed phrase in this card is เป็นพระราชโอรส, without ทรง before เป็น. Learn this whole expression for its royal context; the presence of พระ somewhere in a noun does not by itself establish one rule for every expression.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To understand royal verbs, you must first grasp the concept of social register in Thai, where vocabulary changes based on the status of the person being spoken to or about. Royal verbs (Rachasap) represent the highest level of this hierarchy, replacing everyday actions like eating or sleeping with specific honorific terms.
