พระ
Royal and Sacred Prefix
พระ appears in complete words for the sun and a royal hand, and stands for a monk or Buddha image in other examples. Its presence does not automatically assign one status to every referent.
How It Works
1. Learn The Complete Word
พระอาทิตย์ names the sun in the sunrise example. พระหัตถ์ names the royal hand in the last phrase. These are established words; adding พระ to any ordinary noun does not create a conventional polite form.
2. Read A Standalone Noun
In พระกำลังสวดมนต์อยู่ในโบสถ์, พระ refers to a monk. It can also name a Buddha image. The gold-leaf example is given a literal rendering, while ปิดทองหลังพระ is also an established idiom for doing good without recognition. Context is needed to choose between a literal scene and that idiom.
3. Compare Royal Actions
The listening card requests ทรงฟัง. The dictionary describes ทรง before ordinary verbs as one royal-verb pattern. พระฟัง can instead have พระ as a monk who listens, so the card compares meanings rather than declaring every such string impossible.
4. Do Not Add ทรง Twice
เสวย is already the royal verb for eating. The dictionary’s ทรง rule says not to prefix ทรง again to an already royal verb. The selected task therefore uses เสวย. Other established ทรง phrases include ordinary verbs and royal nouns.
5. Keep Titles And Meanings In Context
พระ has several noun and title uses. พระเอก, for example, names a lead male character. Learn complete conventional forms and their recipients; the presence of พระ does not place every referent in one sacred or social rank.
Examples (4)
- พระอาทิตย์ขึ้นทางทิศตะวันออก
The sun rises in the east.
Word by Word: Phra-aa-thit / rise / way / direction / east
พระอาทิตย์ is the established word for the sun used in this sentence. The statement does not itself express a belief that the sun is sacred.
- พระกำลังสวดมนต์อยู่ในโบสถ์
The monk is chanting in the ordination hall.
Word by Word: Monk / in the middle of / chant / be at / inside / ordination hall
In this sentence, 'พระ' is used as a standalone noun referring to a Buddhist monk.
- เขากำลังปิดทองหลังพระ
He is putting gold leaf on the back of the Buddha image.
Word by Word: he | [ongoing] | apply gold leaf | behind | Buddha image
This can literally describe putting gold leaf behind a Buddha image. ปิดทองหลังพระ also has an idiomatic reading of doing good without recognition; use the whole context to choose the reading.
- พระหัตถ์ของพระราชา
The King's hand.
Word by Word: Royal hand / of / King
Demonstrates 'พระ' used for a royal body part (hand) and a royal title (King).
Common Mistakes
For a royal listening action, using พระฟัง as if พระ alone creates the requested royal verb.
พระฟังทรงฟังThe requested royal action phrase is ทรงฟัง. พระฟัง can instead be an ordinary clause meaning a monk listens; it does not give that requested royal action. The card does not condemn that different clause reading.
Using 'ทรง' with verbs that are already royal.
ทรงเสวยเสวยIn the standard royal-verb convention practised here, เสวย is already the royal eating verb. Use เสวย without adding ทรง again for this task; ทรง also combines with nouns and ordinary verbs in other established royal phrases.
For the ordinary noun friend in this task, adding พระ merely to try to sound more polite.
พระเพื่อนเพื่อนThe requested ordinary word is เพื่อน. พระเพื่อน does not reproduce that word or make every friend reference more polite. Established titles, a monk friend, quotations, or playful constructions need their own context.

The prefix 'พระ' is used to elevate nouns to a royal or sacred status. To understand its usage, learners need to be familiar with the concept of social registers in Thai and the specific system of Royal Language (Rachasap) used for the monarchy and religious figures.
