สัก
Uses of สัก
The six examples show สัก with five minutes, a glass, a single baht in a negative statement, a number of days, something to eat, and an event that has not happened yet. Its reading comes from the complete construction, not an automatic polite effect.
How It Works
1. Time and Amount
สักห้านาที is the requested phrase for about five minutes. In the first example, the speaker asks for that amount of time. Compare ประมาณ in its complete approximation examples; this entry does not establish a formal-versus-casual ranking. ขอน้ำสักแก้วหน่อยครับ requests a glass of water. The native phrase contains แก้ว and no written หนึ่ง; it does not prove that หนึ่ง must always be omitted or that every request sounds considerate.
2. Negative Amount
ฉันไม่มีเงินสักบาทเดียว says that the speaker does not have even a single baht. Read ไม่ together with มีเงิน and the amount phrase. This example does not mean an uncertain small positive amount. NIU also gives a negative สักนิดเลย example, so one “imprecise number” rule would miss negative uses.
3. Questions and an Unspecified Choice
คุณจะไปเที่ยวสักกี่วัน asks about an estimated number of days in the displayed travel context. Compare linked เท่าไหร่ and กี่ in their complete questions. In ฉันอยากกินอะไรสักอย่าง, อะไรสักอย่าง is read as something, without identifying the food. These are specific constructions, not a rule that every question word with สัก has the same function.
4. The Complete Bus Question
ทำไมรถเมล์ยังไม่มาสักที asks why the bus has still not arrived in the displayed situation. A delayed event can lead to impatience in context, but the written text does not guarantee a particular emotion. NIU also gives สักที with a “just once” reading in a different complete expression. Compare linked ในที่สุด through its own examples rather than treating every สักที as a synonym for finally.
5. The Requested Written Forms
The first exercise requests สักห้านาที, with สัก before ห้า. The second requests the complete beer-bottle phrase ขอเบียร์สักขวด. A shortened utterance may rely on context, but does not reproduce that requested phrase. This lesson does not establish a classifier requirement for every possible use of สัก, a pronunciation-frequency rule, or a guaranteed polite effect.
Examples (6)
- ขอเวลากับผมสักห้านาทีได้ไหมครับ
Could I have about five minutes?
Word by Word: request time | with me | about five minutes | can [question] | [ครับ particle]
Read this as a request for about five minutes in the displayed interaction. The natural translation paraphrases the time request; the native กับผม literally mentions with me. Do not infer a guaranteed polite effect or that five minutes is objectively a small amount.
- ขอน้ำสักแก้วหน่อยครับ
May [I] have a glass of water?
Word by Word: request water | some/a glass | หน่อย [request particle] | ครับ [particle]
The request contains สักแก้ว, with แก้ว and no written หนึ่ง. The first-person subject is inferred in the translation. The particles do not guarantee politeness or establish that one must always be omitted.
- ฉันไม่มีเงินสักบาทเดียว
I don't have even a single baht.
Word by Word: I | do not have money | even a single baht
The whole negative amount phrase emphasizes the absence of even a single baht. This is the speaker’s assertion, rather than an approximation of a positive quantity or a general financial fact.
- คุณจะไปเที่ยวสักกี่วัน
About how many days will you go traveling?
Word by Word: you | will go traveling | about how many days
Read สักกี่วัน as asking for an estimated duration in this displayed travel question. It does not establish that every question with กี่ rejects an exact answer.
- ฉันอยากกินอะไรสักอย่าง
I want to eat something.
Word by Word: I | want to eat | อะไรสักอย่าง [something]
In this complete phrase, อะไรสักอย่าง means something. The speaker does not identify a particular food, and อย่าง is part of the displayed expression.
- ทำไมรถเมล์ยังไม่มาสักที
Why hasn't the bus arrived yet?
Word by Word: why | bus | still has not come | สักที [yet in this phrase]
The complete ยังไม่มาสักที phrase refers to the bus not having arrived yet. Context or delivery may convey impatience, but the written text does not prove frustration or that the bus will eventually arrive.
Common Mistakes
Not reproducing the requested phrase สักห้านาที.
ห้าสักนาทีสักห้านาทีThis task requests สักห้านาที, with สัก before ห้า. ห้าสักนาที does not reproduce that sequence. This specific phrase does not establish the position of สัก in every construction.
Not reproducing the requested complete beer-bottle phrase.
ขอเบียร์สักขอเบียร์สักขวดThis exercise explicitly requests ขอเบียร์สักขวด, including ขวด for the bottle. ขอเบียร์สัก omits that requested part. A shortened utterance may depend on context; this task does not declare every contextual omission or every classifierless use of สัก invalid.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To understand 'สัก', you first need to be comfortable with how Thai people count things using the 'Noun + Number + Classifier' structure. Since 'สัก' is placed before numbers or classifiers to soften an amount or make it sound casual, you should already know basic Thai numerals and how to use classifiers for different objects.
