Counting To Ninety-Nine

Level 2

For 11–99, combine the tens and units. Use เอ็ด for a final one and ยี่สิบ for twenty; an exact multiple of ten has no added units word.

How It Works

Numbers From 11 To 99:
Build the number from its tens and units. สิบ means ten. For 11–19, start with สิบ and add the units word; for 11, use สิบเอ็ด.

A Final One:
In this range, a number ending in one uses เอ็ด rather than the standalone numeral หนึ่ง (nueng). The examples สิบเอ็ด (11) and ยี่สิบเอ็ด (21) show this form. The same final-one pattern gives สามสิบเอ็ด (31).

The Twenties:
Twenty is ยี่สิบ. Use ยี่ in this tens form rather than สอง (song). Add the units word for 21–29: ยี่สิบเอ็ด is 21, and ยี่สิบสอง is 22. Twenty itself has no extra units word.

Thirty Through Ninety-Nine:
For the tens from 30 to 90, put the numeral for 3 to 9 before สิบ. Then add the units word when the number is not an exact multiple of ten. For example, สามสิบ is 30, สามสิบห้า is 35, and เก้าสิบเก้า is 99. For a final one, use เอ็ด as described above.
