Days And Dates

Level 2

For a numerical date, the examples use วันที่ followed by a number. A month name can follow the day number, as in the displayed January and February sentences. Read the format in its context rather than assuming every written Thai date uses the same order or calendar.

How It Works

วันที่ + Day Number identifies a numerical date in these examples. A month name can follow: วันที่หนึ่งมกราคม names January 1st, and วันที่ยี่สิบแปดกุมภาพันธ์ names February 28th. The Royal Society dictionary likewise illustrates วันที่ with a day number before the month.

Asking For The Date
วันนี้วันที่เท่าไหร่ครับ asks for today's date. The first practice task requests the phrase วันที่หนึ่งมกราคม, with the number before มกราคม. In the second task, วันที่ห้า is a numerical-date answer, so the selected question is วันนี้วันที่เท่าไหร่. The contrast does not make every question containing วัน a weekday question in every context.

Reading The Complete Examples
วันที่สิบห้า gives the 15th without naming a month. The context must identify which month is intended. In เจอกันวันที่สิบมกราปีหกเก้านะ, the supplied English reads มกรา as January and ปีหกเก้า as the shortened year “'69.” The wording contains six and nine but does not itself name a full four-digit year or era; do not infer a universal year-reading convention from this example.

Keeping A Full Date Clear
The stored illustration วันเสาร์ที่ 15 สิงหาคม 2569 includes a weekday, day number, month, and year. An era label such as พ.ศ. supplies additional information when it appears. Keep the complete wording when identifying a date rather than assuming that an unlabelled or shortened year settles the calendar or century. The related time-of-day entry is a separate topic; these date examples do not establish its clock system.

Examples (5)

  1. วันนี้วันที่เท่าไหร่ครับ

    What is the date today?

Word by Word: Today date how much [polite]?

This question asks for the numerical date using วันที่ with เท่าไหร่.

  2. วันที่หนึ่งมกราคมเป็นวันขึ้นปีใหม่

January 1st is New Year's Day.

Word by Word: Date one January is day up year new.

วันที่หนึ่งมกราคม places the day number before the month name and identifies January 1st.

  3. เราจะไปกรุงเทพฯวันที่สิบห้า

We will go to Bangkok on the 15th.

Word by Word: We will go Bangkok date fifteen.

In this context, the month is understood, so only the date is mentioned.

  4. เขาเกิดวันที่ยี่สิบแปดกุมภาพันธ์

He was born on February 28th.

Word by Word: He born date twenty-eight February.

Uses the specific month name for February.

  5. เจอกันวันที่สิบมกราปีหกเก้านะ

See you on January 10th, '69.

Word by Word: Meet each-other date ten January year six nine [softener].

This example uses มกรา as a shortened form of มกราคม and ปีหกเก้า as a shortened year. Read หกเก้า as six-nine here; the complete year and era require context.

Common Mistakes

  • Placing the month before the day number in this requested Thai date phrase.

    มกราคม วันที่หนึ่ง
    วันที่หนึ่งมกราคม

For this task, put วันที่หนึ่ง before มกราคม: วันที่หนึ่งมกราคม. This gives the requested Thai phrase for January 1st; it does not establish a rule for every numeric or international date notation.

  • Choosing The Question For The Numerical-Date Answer.

    วันนี้วันอะไร — วันที่ห้า
    วันนี้วันที่เท่าไหร่ — วันที่ห้า

The supplied answer วันที่ห้า gives a numerical date. Use วันนี้วันที่เท่าไหร่ for that answer; วันนี้วันอะไร asks what day it is in the displayed contrast. Interpret วัน and วันที่ with the whole question and answer.
