Negation in Context

Level 3

ไม่ negates the action or description.
ไม่ได้ can deny an occurrence or an assumption; read the time expression and context.
In the displayed กินไม่ได้ comparison, postverbal ไม่ได้ expresses inability or a restriction rather than a claim that eating did not occur.

How It Works

1. Read The Time And Context
เขาไม่กินเผ็ด can describe not eating spicy food. The displayed translation reads it as a habit; the sentence alone does not give a reason or state whether the speaker likes spicy food. เมื่อวานเขาไม่ได้กินเผ็ด describes nonoccurrence yesterday, with the past time supplied by เมื่อวาน. ตอนเด็กๆ ฉันไม่กินผัก also concerns the past, while using ไม่. In พรุ่งนี้ฉันไม่ได้ไปทำงาน, พรุ่งนี้ supplies tomorrow. The sentence does not itself establish a previous plan, a changed plan, or the reason for not going.

2. Deny An Identity Or Condition
ฉันไม่ใช่หมอ denies being a doctor. ฉันไม่ได้เป็นหวัด denies having a cold. This latter example does not make ไม่ได้เป็น an illness-only construction, and หวัด is a cold rather than a claim about feeling cold. The displayed statement is language practice, not a diagnosis.

3. Interpret The Displayed Pairs
For the plain statement that it was not hot yesterday, the exercise requests เมื่อวานไม่ร้อน. Do not treat ไม่ได้ as a past-tense ending. The alternative เมื่อวานไม่ได้ร้อน is not certified here as always ungrammatical; another discourse context would need its own review. In the tomorrow pair, both strings refer to tomorrow. The parenthetical phrase about inability or changed plans names the exercise intention; it does not prove that every ไม่ไป states a personal choice or that every ไม่ได้ไป establishes changed plans.

4. Compare Negation And Ability
In the displayed eating exercise, กินไม่ได้ can express cannot eat or not permitted to eat, with the context determining which. ไม่ได้กิน can deny eating or getting to eat; the complete time and discourse context still matter. This pair is not a rule that every preverbal ไม่ได้ is past or that postverbal inability is only circumstantial. Compare ได้ for ability, possibility, permission, or opportunity, เป็น for learned know-how, and ไหว for physical or mental capacity. These descriptions do not divide all possible inability into mutually exclusive categories.

Examples (6)

  1. เขาไม่กินเผ็ด

He does not eat spicy food.

Word by Word: He not eat spicy

The displayed translation gives a habitual reading of ไม่. The complete Thai sentence does not state his preference or why he does not eat spicy food.

  2. เมื่อวานเขาไม่ได้กินเผ็ด

Yesterday, he did not eat spicy food.

Word by Word: Yesterday he not eat spicy

เมื่อวาน supplies yesterday. ไม่ได้ denies the eating in that context; it is not itself a past-tense ending.

  3. ฉันไม่ใช่หมอ

    I am not a doctor.

Word by Word: I not-be doctor

ไม่ใช่ denies the doctor identity in this complete sentence. This example does not restrict every other identity or condition to the same construction.

  4. พรุ่งนี้ฉันไม่ได้ไปทำงาน

Tomorrow I am not going to work.

Word by Word: Tomorrow I not go work

พรุ่งนี้ supplies tomorrow. ไม่ได้ is therefore not limited to past time. A previous plan, a change of plans, and the reason for not going are not stated.

  5. ตอนเด็กๆ ฉันไม่กินผัก

When I was a child, I did not eat vegetables.

Word by Word: Time child-child I not eat vegetable

ตอนเด็กๆ places the displayed habitual reading in childhood. The use of ไม่ shows that this form is not limited to present or future time.

  6. ฉันไม่ได้เป็นหวัด

I do not have a cold.

Word by Word: I not be [have] a cold

ไม่ได้เป็นหวัด denies having a cold in this complete statement. It does not mean a cold temperature or restrict ไม่ได้ plus เป็น to illnesses. Reading the example does not establish anyone’s health.

Common Mistakes

  • Treating ไม่ได้ as a past-tense ending in the requested plain description.

    เมื่อวานไม่ได้ร้อน
    เมื่อวานไม่ร้อน

Use เมื่อวานไม่ร้อน for the requested plain description of yesterday. เมื่อวาน supplies the past time; ไม่ supplies the negation. This exercise does not establish an absolute ban on ไม่ได้ before every descriptive predicate in every discourse context.

  • Reading the two tomorrow strings as an automatic past-versus-future contrast.

พรุ่งนี้ไม่ไป (when you mean you can't go/plans changed)
    พรุ่งนี้ไม่ได้ไป

Both strings contain พรุ่งนี้ and refer to tomorrow. The parenthetical inability or changed-plans wording is the requested exercise context. Read ไม่ได้ and ไม่ with that context; do not infer a personal choice from ไม่ alone, or a documented changed plan from ไม่ได้ alone. The alternative Thai string is not declared universally ungrammatical.

  • Ignoring the requested inability or restriction meaning in the eating pair.

ไม่ได้กิน (to mean 'cannot eat' or 'not allowed to eat')
    กินไม่ได้

For the displayed inability or restriction task, กินไม่ได้ expresses cannot eat or not permitted to eat according to context. ไม่ได้กิน can instead deny eating or getting to eat; time and context remain necessary. The contrast does not make every preverbal use past-only or exclude learned ability from postverbal constructions.
