Identifying with ที่ ... คือ

Level 4

The examples begin with a clause introduced by ที่ and identify its referent after คือ. For example, ที่ผมต้องการคือเวลา identifies time as what the speaker wants. This is the displayed focus pattern, not the only possible form of a Thai identification sentence.

How It Works

1. Read the Opening Clause
In ที่ผมต้องการคือเวลา, ที่ introduces “what I want.” This is not the place meaning of ที่. The entire opening clause is identified as เวลา, time, by the rest of the sentence. Keep the complete clause together rather than treating ที่ as an isolated replacement for any noun.

2. Identify the Referent
The linked คือ construction can identify or define a referent. In these displayed sentences, คือ connects the opening clause to time, truth, health, thanks, or safety. The linked เป็น has its own constructions, including role and category statements; the contrast does not require treating every identification sentence as an equation with one compulsory verb.

3. Follow the Specific Examples
ที่เขาพูดมาคือความจริง identifies what he said as the truth; that is the speaker’s assertion, not independent proof that it is true. ที่น่าเป็นห่วงคือสุขภาพของเขา identifies his health as a concern. ที่สำคัญที่สุดคือความปลอดภัย presents safety as the highest priority in the speaker’s statement. These sentences focus attention without specifying a formal register or proving an unmentioned set of competing concerns.

4. Reproduce the Requested Pattern
Both exercises request ที่ผมต้องการคือเวลา. The first tests the requested คือ connection, and the second tests the opening ที่ clause. Their alternatives do not reproduce that full pattern. They do not establish that every Thai sentence needs this opening or that เป็น has no identification uses.

5. Compare Other Clause Constructions
The linked action-noun construction and content-clause construction have their own structures. Learn them in their complete examples rather than substituting them for ที่ solely because an English translation contains “what,” “that,” or an action noun.

Examples (5)

  1. ที่ผมต้องการคือเวลา

    What I want is time.

Word by Word: what I want is time

The opening ที่ผมต้องการ refers to what the speaker wants; คือเวลา identifies it as time. ต้องการ can have a need reading in context, but this translation uses want.

  2. ที่เขาพูดมาคือความจริง

What he said is the truth.

Word by Word: what he said [up to this point] is truth

The speaker identifies what he said as the truth. The sentence states that assessment; it does not independently verify his statement.

  3. ที่น่าเป็นห่วงคือสุขภาพของเขา

What is worrying is his health.

Word by Word: what is concerning is health of him

The opening clause introduces what is concerning, and คือสุขภาพของเขา identifies it as his health. Other worries are not listed in the sentence.

  4. ที่ฉันอยากบอกคือขอบคุณนะ

What I want to say is thank you.

Word by Word: what I want tell is thank you [particle]

The opening clause introduces what the speaker wants to say; the rest presents thanks with the particle นะ. Its effect depends on the complete interaction.

  5. ที่สำคัญที่สุดคือความปลอดภัย

What is most important is safety.

Word by Word: That important most is safety

Uses the superlative 'most important' to define the priority.

Common Mistakes

  • Using เป็น instead of the คือ connection requested by this exercise.

    ที่ผมต้องการเป็นเวลา
    ที่ผมต้องการคือเวลา

The task requests ที่ผมต้องการคือเวลา to identify time as what the speaker wants. Replacing คือ with เป็น does not reproduce that requested construction. This is a construction-specific comparison, not a universal prohibition on เป็น in identification contexts.

  • Omitting ที่ from the opening clause requested by this exercise.

    ผมต้องการคือเวลา
    ที่ผมต้องการคือเวลา

The task requests the complete opening ที่ผมต้องการ followed by คือเวลา. ผมต้องการคือเวลา omits ที่ and does not reproduce this requested pattern. Other sentences can use ผมต้องการ with an appropriate object; this task is not a rule that every statement needs ที่.

Learn This First

To understand 'ที่ ... คือ', you first need to know how 'ที่' functions as a relative pronoun to create clauses (e.g., 'the thing that I want'). You also need to understand 'คือ', which acts as an equals sign to identify what that thing is. Together, they create a 'cleft sentence' structure that puts emphasis on a specific piece of information.
