ข้า / เจ้า

I and You with ข้า and เจ้า

Level 6

ข้า: I / Me
เจ้า: You
In เจ้าทำให้ข้าประทับใจ, the addressee has impressed the speaker. Read the roles in the whole sentence.

How It Works

1. Read the Speaker and Addressee
In ข้าจะไปกับเจ้า, ข้า is the speaker, I, and เจ้า refers to the person addressed, you. จะ supplies will in this example. In เจ้าทำให้ข้าประทับใจ, เจ้า is the subject and ข้า is the person who is impressed; ทำให้ works together as a causative construction.

2. Read Possession in Context
ใจเจ้า in ใจเจ้าคิดอะไรอยู่ means your heart. The final อยู่ participates in the ongoing thinking construction, rather than simply meaning located. In ข้าไม่เชื่อคำพูดของเจ้า, คำพูดของเจ้า means your words, with ของ marking the relationship. Do not translate เจ้า as lord merely because that form also occurs in titles and nouns.

3. Keep Pronoun Choice Contextual
The lexical source gives ข้า as I/me in superior-to-inferior or intimate use, including an example with เอ็ง. That example does not make เอ็ง its only possible partner. The displayed ข้า/เจ้า sentences show their own pronoun choices; they do not prove universal frequency, a fixed social rank, or a rule for all historical and fantasy media.

4. Compare the Complete Written Form
ข้าพเจ้า is a distinct first-person form used in formal contexts, especially writing. Read it as a complete pronoun. The retained exercise requests ข้าพเจ้า in its confirmation formula; this does not prove that every legal document must use it or establish a word-by-word religious etymology.

5. Read Other Registers Separately
Compare ราชาศัพท์ and pronoun and register basics in their own full contexts. A speaker using ข้า or เจ้า does not by itself certify a royal-address construction. Likewise, these Central Thai examples do not establish the gender, function or everyday use of similar forms in Northern Thai, Isan or Lao.

Examples (4)

  1. เจ้าทำให้ข้าประทับใจ

    You have impressed me.

Word by Word: you / cause / I / impressed

เจ้า refers to you, while ข้า refers to the speaker. ทำให้ introduces the result that the speaker is impressed.

  2. ข้าจะไปกับเจ้า

    I will go with you.

    Word by Word: I / will / go / with / you

ข้า is the subject, จะ supplies will, and กับเจ้า means with you in this sentence.

  3. ใจเจ้าคิดอะไรอยู่

What is your heart thinking? (What is on your mind?)

Word by Word: heart / your / think / what / ongoing

เจ้า follows ใจ to mark your heart. คิดอะไรอยู่ asks what it is thinking, with อยู่ contributing ongoing aspect here.

  4. ข้าไม่เชื่อคำพูดของเจ้า

I do not believe your words.

    Word by Word: I / not / believe / spoken-words / of / you

ข้า is the speaker, ไม่ negates เชื่อ, and คำพูดของเจ้า means your words with ของ linking the words to you.

Common Mistakes

  • Choosing เจ้า when the exercise requests the pronoun เธอ.

    เจ้าอยากกินอะไร
    เธออยากกินอะไร

For this task, use เธออยากกินอะไร (thoe yaak gin arai), with เธอ as the addressee. The retained เจ้าอยากกินอะไร (jao yaak gin arai) uses a different pronoun for you and does not reproduce the requested choice. It is not declared ungrammatical or unsuitable in every real conversation.

  • Replacing the requested complete pronoun ข้าพเจ้า with ข้า.

    ข้าขอรับรองว่าเอกสารนี้เป็นความจริง
    ข้าพเจ้าขอรับรองว่าเอกสารนี้เป็นความจริง

The exercise requests ข้าพเจ้า in ข้าพเจ้าขอรับรองว่าเอกสารนี้เป็นความจริง. The retained ข้าขอรับรองว่าเอกสารนี้เป็นความจริง replaces it with ข้า, so it does not reproduce that requested form. This compares pronoun choice; it does not certify the document as true, impose a universal legal formula, or explain either pronoun through a religious etymology.
