Formal I

Level 5

ข้าพเจ้า means ‘I’ or ‘me’ in formal contexts, especially writing. It presents the speaker in a formal voice.

How It Works

Formal Self-Reference
ข้าพเจ้า is a first-person pronoun used in formal contexts, especially writing. Learn it as part of a complete statement rather than assuming that every formal situation requires it.

Read The Whole Statement
ข้าพเจ้าขอรับรองว่า… says ‘I certify that…’; the certification meaning comes from ขอรับรองว่า. ข้าพเจ้ามีความยินดี… expresses the speaker’s pleasure. ข้าพเจ้าตกลงยอมรับ… states agreement to accept something. These are different actions using the same formal self-reference.

Possession
ของ marks possession. In ความประสงค์ของข้าพเจ้า, it links ‘wish’ to the speaker: ‘my wish.’

Choose For The Addressee
The related form ข้าพระพุทธเจ้า belongs to royal address; it is not a general way to make any sentence more formal. Compare ผม and ดิฉัน in their own contexts when choosing a spoken self-reference. A pronoun choice needs the speaker, addressee, and setting; this entry does not impose one choice on every interview or ceremony.

Examples (4)

I certify that the above statements are true in every respect.

    Word by Word: I / request / certify / that / message / above / be / truth / every / respect

The speaker declares that the preceding statements are true. ขอรับรองว่า supplies the certification meaning; ข้าพเจ้า supplies formal self-reference.

I am greatly pleased to be here today.

    Word by Word: I / have / happiness / be / extremely / that / get / come / in / today

The speaker expresses great pleasure at being here today. ข้าพเจ้า gives the statement a formal first-person voice.

    This is my wish.

Word by Word: this / is / intention / of / me

Shows the use of ของ with ข้าพเจ้า to indicate formal possession.

I agree to accept the conditions according to this contract.

    Word by Word: I / agree / accept / condition / according to / contract / classifier / this

Demonstrates the use of the pronoun in a contractual agreement.

Common Mistakes

  • Compare Two Ways To Refer To Yourself In An Interview.

Both sentences express wanting to work here. The first uses formal ข้าพเจ้า; the second illustrates ผม with ครับ. The second can be chosen for the intended spoken response, but this comparison does not make the first sentence ungrammatical or prescribe one pronoun for every speaker.

  • Confusing it with the royal pronoun.

ข้าพระพุทธเจ้า is tied to a royal addressee and the relevant protocol; it is not a general-purpose upgrade of ข้าพเจ้า. For an ordinary written certification, the second wording fits the intended setting.
