Documents and Editions with ฉบับ

Level 5

The first examples use ฉบับ to count letters and newspapers or point to a contract. The final examples identify a revised dictionary edition and a director’s movie version.

How It Works

Count the displayed documents: จดหมายสองฉบับ and หนังสือพิมพ์วันละสองฉบับ use ฉบับ with two letters and a daily newspaper count. Compare the linked noun + number + classifier pattern with these complete examples. Their wording does not establish a compulsory classifier for every document, publication, or arrangement of physical copies.

Identify an edition or version: พจนานุกรมฉบับปรับปรุงใหม่ identifies a newly revised dictionary edition. ฉบับผู้กำกับ identifies a director’s version in the displayed movie sentence. These readings do not depend on a claim about recent language change.

Choose the requested unit: Compare เล่ม in its book-counting context and ใบ in its own examples. The newspaper exercise requests ฉบับ; it does not ban every possible newspaper grouping expressed with เล่ม. The letter exercise requests counting one letter as a document rather than counting its paper. Page count and sheet count are distinct; a page count alone does not tell us whether the paper is printed on one or both sides. The examples do not establish a universal completeness test, frequency, or an exclusive register.

Examples (5)

  1. ผมได้รับจดหมายสองฉบับ

    I received two letters.

    Word by Word: I | receive | letters | two | ฉบับ [document classifier]

ได้รับ functions as receive here. The selected English past tense supplies the event time from context. สองฉบับ counts two letters; the sentence does not state their page or sheet counts.

  2. บ้านนี้รับหนังสือพิมพ์วันละสองฉบับ

This household receives two newspapers per day.

Word by Word: this household | receives | newspapers | per day | two | ฉบับ [document classifier]

บ้านนี้ is read as this household in this example, rather than a building acting as a recipient. วันละ gives the per-day rate. The sentence uses ฉบับ for the newspaper count without proving that all newspaper groupings require it.

  3. คุณต้องเซ็นสัญญาฉบับนี้

    You must sign this contract.

Word by Word: you | must | sign | contract | ฉบับ [document classifier] | this

The example contains ต้อง, so must is part of its instruction. สัญญาฉบับนี้ displays the linked noun + classifier + นี้ pattern. This is a quoted instruction, not verification of a current legal duty.

  4. นี่คือพจนานุกรมฉบับปรับปรุงใหม่

This is the newly revised edition of the dictionary.

Word by Word: this is | dictionary | edition | newly revised

ฉบับ identifies an edition here. ปรับปรุงใหม่ functions as newly revised or updated in this phrase; translating the complete phrase avoids the misleading fragments improve and new.

  5. หนังเรื่องนี้มีฉบับผู้กำกับด้วย

This movie has a director’s version too.

Word by Word: movie | เรื่อง [movie classifier] | this | has | version | director | too

ฉบับผู้กำกับ identifies a director’s version in this example. เรื่อง counts or identifies the movie in หนังเรื่องนี้; it is separate from the version reading of ฉบับ. The sentence does not specify every alteration in that version or prove a recent usage trend.

Common Mistakes

  • Count the requested newspapers with ฉบับ.

    หนังสือพิมพ์สามเล่ม
    หนังสือพิมพ์สามฉบับ

This exercise requests หนังสือพิมพ์สามฉบับ exactly. The archived หนังสือพิมพ์สามเล่ม uses a different classifier and does not match the requested newspaper-counting pattern. The task does not establish a ban on every other way of packaging or grouping newspapers.

  • Count one letter as a document with ฉบับ.

    จดหมายหนึ่งแผ่น
    จดหมายหนึ่งฉบับ

The requested form is จดหมายหนึ่งฉบับ. The archived จดหมายหนึ่งแผ่น selects a different paper-related unit, which is not the document unit requested here. Counting a document, its pages, and its physical sheets are separate tasks; three pages do not necessarily mean three sheets.
