เล่ม
Books and Tools with เล่ม
หนังสือสองเล่ม and กรรไกรหนึ่งเล่ม give counts; มีดเล่มนี้ identifies this knife; สมุดหลายเล่ม gives many notebooks. These examples teach their displayed classifier patterns.
How It Works
1. The Objects Here
The four native examples use เล่ม with หนังสือ, มีด, สมุด, and กรรไกร. Compare classifiers through these complete phrases. NIU’s complete selected เล่ม entry separately lists books and several sharp-object uses and gives two full book clauses. This lexical witness does not establish a palm-leaf-stylus origin story, a frequency ranking, or a rule that physical shape alone selects every classifier.
2. Displayed Counts
หนังสือสองเล่ม names two books, and กรรไกรหนึ่งเล่ม names one pair of scissors. Compare the displayed Noun + Number + เล่ม pattern. The English phrase a pair of scissors does not require Thai คู่ in this retained task; this is not a universal ban on every contextual classifier alternative.
3. A Particular Knife And Many Notebooks
มีดเล่มนี้ uses เล่ม before นี้ to identify this knife. Compare the exact displayed Noun + เล่ม + นี้/นั้น pattern without requiring a classifier before every demonstrative in every possible clause. หลาย precedes เล่ม in สมุดหลายเล่ม; it gives many, not an exact number.
4. Two Requested Book Phrases
The first asks you to copy หนังสือสามเล่ม with เล่ม. Preserve หนังสือสามอัน as the archived alternative, without judging a speaker childish or uneducated. The second asks for หนังสือสองเล่ม in the displayed noun-first pattern. The reversed archived phrase does not meet this exact copying task; the exercise does not assert one mandatory order for every Thai counting construction or misidentify Number + Classifier + Noun as an English rule.
Examples (4)
- หนังสือสองเล่ม
Two books.
Word by Word: book | two | classifier
The displayed phrase places หนังสือ before สอง and เล่ม. It gives a count of two books rather than a universal word-order rule.
- มีดเล่มนี้คมมาก
This knife is very sharp.
Word by Word: knife | classifier | this | sharp | very
มีดเล่มนี้ identifies this knife, and คมมาก describes it as very sharp. The classifier pattern is read from this complete example.
- เขามีสมุดหลายเล่ม
He has many notebooks.
Word by Word: he | have | notebook | many | classifier
หลาย gives many notebooks and appears before เล่ม here. The clause does not specify their exact number.
- กรรไกรหนึ่งเล่ม
One pair of scissors.
Word by Word: scissors | one | classifier
กรรไกรหนึ่งเล่ม is the retained phrase for one pair of scissors. The English pair wording does not change the exact Thai classifier requested here.
Common Mistakes
Not copying the requested หนังสือสามเล่ม phrase with เล่ม.
หนังสือสามอันหนังสือสามเล่มCopy หนังสือสามเล่ม using เล่ม for this book-count task. The retained หนังสือสามอัน alternative does not match the requested classifier; no judgment about a speaker’s age or education follows.
Not copying the requested noun-first หนังสือสองเล่ม pattern.
สองเล่มหนังสือหนังสือสองเล่มCopy หนังสือสองเล่ม with หนังสือ first, then สองเล่ม. The task selects this complete phrase and does not impose one word order on every possible counting construction.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To use the classifier 'เล่ม' correctly, you first need to understand the general role of classifiers in Thai grammar and the specific word order used when counting nouns (Noun + Number + Classifier).
