อดไม่ได้

Cannot Help It

Level 4

The pattern อดไม่ได้ (òt mâi dâi) means "cannot help but" or "cannot resist." It is used when you have an internal impulse—like laughing, crying, or wondering—that you simply cannot hold back.

How It Works

Cannot Refrain From An Action
อด can mean refrain or abstain. In อดหัวเราะไม่ได้, หัวเราะ appears between อด and ไม่ได้, giving cannot help laughing. The first example connects that reaction with seeing a funny face.

Read The Existing Variants
The bad-news example has อดสงสารเขาไม่ได้, cannot help feeling pity for him. The wondering example has อดที่จะสงสัยไม่ได้. Follow each complete phrase; these examples do not establish a frequency ranking or a rule for every possible longer clause.

Read Self-Restraint In Context
อดใจ means restrain oneself. The snack example uses อดใจไม่ได้ and says the speaker must buy some to take home. The anger example uses อดไม่ไหว and says he must speak out. The surrounding statements supply the particular urges and reactions.

Compare Other Meanings Of อด
อด also has miss-out and endure uses. The rain card asks for อดไปเที่ยว, missing out on the outing. The heat card asks for ทนไม่ได้, cannot stand it. Read those complete intended statements rather than applying one meaning to every phrase beginning with อด.

Read Time From The Account
The same Thai verb form can appear with a past or present reading. The English examples use the surrounding account to choose cannot or could not.

  • Confusing 'อดไม่ได้' (cannot help) with 'อด' + Verb (miss out).

    ฝนตก ผมเลยอดไม่ได้ไปเที่ยว
    ฝนตก ผมเลยอดไปเที่ยว

This task says the rain prevented the outing, so practise ผมเลยอดไปเที่ยว, I therefore missed out on going out. The other displayed sentence inserts ไม่ได้ and does not reproduce that requested miss-out phrase.

  • Misplacing the verb after the entire phrase.

    ผมอดไม่ได้หัวเราะ
    ผมอดหัวเราะไม่ได้

For this task, place หัวเราะ between อด and ไม่ได้: ผมอดหัวเราะไม่ได้. Compare that full phrase with the different written sequence ผมอดไม่ได้หัวเราะ. The card practises the displayed action-between-markers pattern.

  • Confusing 'อดไม่ได้' with 'ทนไม่ได้'.

    อากาศร้อนมาก ผมอดไม่ได้
    อากาศร้อนมาก ผมทนไม่ได้

The task asks for cannot stand the heat: อากาศร้อนมาก ผมทนไม่ได้. The อดหัวเราะไม่ได้ pattern instead concerns refraining from an action. Use the complete phrase matching the intended heat statement.
