What Happens Alongside an Event
Aniga oo … describes my circumstances; intii … can frame a past interval.
How It Works
A background clause commonly has a long pronoun, name or definite noun as its head, followed by oo and a relative description. Names and personal pronouns require this connector even before their first modifier. When the head supplies the relative subject, affirmative reduced agreement applies.
In Aniga oo karinaya cuntada ayaa walaashay timid, the background describes me cooking; the main event concerns my sister arriving. Feminine reduced qoslaysa describes Sahra's accompanying laughter in the second example.
A negative background uses dependent aan and a reduced subjunctive. Isaga oo aan shaah cabbin supplies ‘without drinking tea’, while leaving the main event affirmative.
An intii-clause can explicitly frame temporal overlap and contain its own short subject pronoun. Background relatives can also express manner, reason, purpose or condition. Inta/intii does not always mean ‘while’: punctual events can yield ‘as soon as’, and dependent negation can yield ‘before’. These examples retain the documented separated pronoun-plus-oo spelling.
