Negating a Past Event
Ma plus reduced subjunctive denies a past event in an unfocused main clause.
How It Works
Class-one reduced subjunctives generally end in -in. Classes two and three use -n or longer -nin after their appropriate stems. Stem alternations still matter: qori is an infinitive, while qorin is the reduced subjunctive.
Compare Shalay waxaan qoray warqad, “Yesterday I wrote a letter,” with Shalay ma aan qorin warqad, “Yesterday I did not write a letter.” Negation replaces the affirmative particle frame and qoray. A subject pronoun after ma is optional.
Frequent ma arag and ma maqal occur alongside regular ma arkin and ma maqlin. Negative dependent and focused clauses instead use aan with reduced subjunctive; context supplies present or past time. Some speakers combine ma with an aan–pronoun contraction in past main clauses. These are grammatical alternatives.
