inta / intaan
Until and Before in Context
Affirmative inta can mean while or as soon as. Inta with negative aan can mean before.
How It Works
Inta/intii introduces a temporal clause. A continuing event allows “while”; a punctual event can mean “as soon as.” Intii … oo dhan covers the whole duration. The dependent clause has its own subject and contains no main-clause sentence particle.
Intaan has two established analyses: inta combined with affirmative subject aan, “while I/we,” and inta combined with negative aan, supporting before or not-until readings in context. Compare intaan karinayo, “while I am cooking,” with inta aanan karin, “before I cook.” The negative construction uses a reduced subjunctive.
Negative combinations include aanan “I not” and aanay/aysan “she/they not.” Optional ka hor reinforces “before.” These particular contractions do not establish a universal joining rule. Ilaa supplies a separate, straightforward “until” construction.

Aanan combines first-person subject marking with negation; tegin is the reduced subjunctive.
