-о / -е
Neuter Nouns
Neuter nouns (средњи род) end in -о after hard consonants (село, пиво) or -е after soft consonants (поље, сунце). Other common neuter nouns like дете and име also end in -е. They trigger neuter agreement on adjectives and verbs.
How It Works
Neuter nouns (средњи род) represent about 10–15% of Serbian vocabulary, covering vital everyday words like пиво (beer), село (village), сунце (sun), and дете (child).
1. Choosing Between -о and -е:
For standard neuter nouns, the nominative singular ending depends on the consonant preceding it:
- -о follows hard consonants: сел-о (village), мест-о (place), млек-о (milk), вин-о (wine).
- -е follows soft (palatal) consonants (ј, љ, њ, ћ, ђ, ч, џ, ш, ж) and ц: пољ-е (field), сунц-е (sun), срц-е (heart), лиц-е (face). (Note: мор-е 'sea' historically retains -е).
- -е with other stems: Some frequent neuter nouns end in -е even after a hard consonant. These belong to special historical classes: young beings and children with stem extensions (t-stems like дет-е 'child', пил-е 'chicken') and words extending in -н- (n-stems like им-е 'name', врем-е 'time').
2. Identical Nominative and Accusative:
A crucial rule for neuter nouns is that the accusative singular is always identical to the nominative singular (Видим село — I see a village; Пијем пиво — I drink beer). For regular neuter nouns that take plural forms, the nominative and accusative plural are likewise identical, both ending in -а (Видим села — I see villages; поља — fields). Note that certain neuter words form irregular plurals instead, such as дете, which uses the collective noun деца (children).
3. Adjective and Verb Agreement:
Modifiers and past participles must match the neuter noun:
- Modifiers ending in hard stems take -о: ново село (a new village).
- Modifiers ending in soft stems take -е: вруће млеко (hot milk), наше поље (our field).
- In the past tense (ordinary past tense), the singular participle takes -ло (while regular neuter plurals take -ла): Сунце је сијало (The sun shone) vs. Села су била лепа (The villages were beautiful).
4. Watch Out for False Neuters:
Not every word ending in -о or -е is neuter!
- Male names (Марко, Павле) take masculine agreement.
- Masculine nouns where /l/ historically vocalized into /o/ (посао — job, сто — table) remain masculine: добар посао, not *добро посао.
- Clipped loanwords like ауто (short for аутомобил) prescriptively take masculine agreement: нови ауто.
- The feminine noun мисао (thought) takes feminine agreement: паметна мисао.
Examples (4)
- Ово мало село је веома мирно.
This small village is very peaceful.
Word by Word: This small village is very peaceful.
село is a hard-stem neuter noun in -о; the demonstrative (ово), adjective (мало), and predicate adjective (мирно) all take neuter singular endings.
- Топло сунце је сијало цео дан.
The warm sun shone all day.
Word by Word: Warm sun is shone whole day.
сунце ends in -е after the affricate ц. The adjective топло takes -о (hard stem), and the past participle сијало takes the neuter ending -ло.
- Да ли је твоје ново одело скупо?
Is your new suit expensive?
Word by Word: Whether is your new suit expensive?
одело (suit) is neuter. The possessive pronoun твоје ends in -е (soft stem after ј), while the hard-stem adjective ново ends in -о.
- Пијемо хладно пиво у граду.
We are drinking cold beer in town.
Word by Word: We-drink cold beer in town.
In the accusative singular, neuter nouns like пиво are identical in form to the nominative singular.
Common Mistakes
Using the hard ending -о with soft-stem adjectives modifying neuter nouns
Пијем врућо млеко.Пијем вруће млеко.Adjectives ending in palatal consonants (like ћ in врућ) must take -е in the neuter nominative and accusative singular, never -о.
Treating masculine nouns ending in -о as neuter
То је велико посао.То је велики посао.The noun посао (job) is masculine (stem посла- where historical final l shifted to o). It requires masculine agreement (велики), not neuter (велико).
Confusing the neuter plural -а with the feminine singular -а
Стара писма је стигла.Стара писма су стигла.Neuter nouns form their plural with -а (писмо -> писма). Because it is a plural subject, the verb must be plural (су стигла), not singular (је стигла).
