Verbal Nouns and Their Complements

Level 6Sounds Like glagolske imenice na -n̂e; -će

Serbian verbal nouns (глаголске именице) end in -ње or -ће and decline as regular neuter nouns. Suffix -ње is productive and mostly built from imperfective verbs to denote continuous processes (читати → читање), while -ће belongs to a closed set of verbs and typically denotes concrete results or milestones (открити → откриће). When nominalizing, direct objects shift to the genitive case, reflexive 'се' is dropped, and adverbs become adjectives.

How It Works

Verbal nouns in Serbian bridge verbs and nouns, playing an essential role in formal, scientific, and administrative prose.

1. Morphological Derivation:
Verbal nouns are neuter nouns derived predominantly using the productive formative -ње (historically formed when the Common Slavic noun-forming suffix *-ьje attached to past passive participle stems in *-n- / *-en-, yielding -ње, and in *-t-, yielding -ће). Synchronically, standard grammars describe verbal nouns as deriving from the verbal stem via suffixation (-ње, -ење, -ће) with stem-class alternations, structurally paralleling the base of the passive participle where such a participle exists (though verbal nouns form freely on intransitive bases as well):
• Derivatives in -ње and -ење:
- Infinitive vowel stems in -а-: Attach -ње directly to the stem without consonant change (paralleling passive participles in -ан where applicable): чита-ти → читање ('reading'), спава-ти → спавање ('sleeping'), путова-ти → путовање ('traveling'), трча-ти → трчање ('running').
- Verbs in -ети:
Verbs with infinitives in -ети form verbal nouns either with unmutated stems or through iotation of the stem consonant, determined by lexical and historical verb conjugation classes rather than transitivity:
  1. Unmutated suffixation on the -е- stem: Stems append -ње directly without consonant alternation: лете-ти → летење ('flying'), седе-ти → седење ('sitting'), бде-ти → бдење ('vigil / waking'), уме-ти → умење ('skill / competence'). Note that verbs such as разумети do not yield *разумење in standard Serbian; instead, the standard verbal noun is derived from the secondary imperfective base разумевати → разумевање ('understanding / comprehension'; e.g. међусобно разумевање, разумевање прочитаног текста).
  2. Iotated suffixation: Stems undergo regular jotation before historical *-en-ьje (synchronically appearing as stem alternation before -ење), occurring in both transitive and intransitive verbs: видети → виђење ('meeting / seeing each other; viewpoint / perspective'), волети → вољење ('loving'), живети → живљење ('living / life'), жудети → жуђење ('yearning / longing'), as well as inchoative deadjectival verbs denoting a change of state (бледети → блеђење 'fading', црвенети → црвењење 'blushing / turning red', жутети → жућење 'yellowing').
- Verbs in -ити: Form verbal nouns using -ење accompanied by regular iotation of the final stem consonant (paralleling the passive participle base in -ен where applicable): носити → ношење ('carrying'), долазити → долажење ('coming / arrival'), боравити → борављење ('staying / residing'), учити → учење ('learning / studying').
- Consonant stems: Root consonant stems take -ење directly on the root, triggering regular phonological shifts: раст-и → растење ('growing'), пећ-и (stem пек-) → печење ('baking / roasting').

• Derivatives in -ће (Closed, Non-Productive Set):
The suffix -ће is restricted to a small lexical set of neuter nouns historically formed by attaching *-ьje to participle stems ending in *-t- (*-t + *-ьje > -ће):
- Verbs with participles in -т: открити (пасивни партицип: открит) → откриће ('discovery'), предузети (предузет) → предузеће ('enterprise'), распети (распет) → распеће ('crucifixion').
- Verbs in -нути: надахнути → надахнуће ('inspiration'), ганути → гануће ('deep emotion'), чезнути → чезнуће ('yearning'), посрнути → посрнуће ('stumble / moral lapse').
- Abstract or lexicalized derivatives: бити → биће ('being / creature'). Transitive пити forms the concrete noun пиће ('beverage', nomen rei), while the verbal action noun itself is formed productively as пијење ('drinking', nomen actionis).

2. Aspect and Semantics:
• Imperfective verbs form open, productive verbal nouns designating an ongoing activity, process, habit, or state: плаћање ('paying'), чекање ('waiting'), путовање ('traveling').
• Perfective verbs do not form verbal nouns freely. When they occur, they typically denote concrete outcomes, singular events, or lexicalized results (nomen acti): рођење ('birth'), решење ('decision / solution'), извршење ('execution / enforcement'), ослобођење ('liberation').
• Standard Serbian prefers imperfective forms for public and cultural events: отварање изложбе (rather than perfective *отворење).

3. Syntactic Adaptation and Case Government:
• Genitive Conversion: The direct object of a transitive verb obligatorily converts to a genitive complement: учити језик → учење језика.
• Prepositional Retention: Complements governed by prepositions or oblique cases maintain their original case government: размишљати о проблему → размишљање о проблему; помагати људима (Dat.) → помагање људима.
• Suppletion: Not every verb freely generates a noun in -ње. Motion and stative verbs frequently rely on root nouns or derivational suppletives: ићи → одлазак / долазак (not *иђење); пасти → пад (not *падење).

Examples (4)

  1. Њихово дуготрајно неслагање о кључним питањима довело је до прекида преговора.

Their prolonged disagreement on key issues led to the breakdown of negotiations.

Word by Word: Their prolonged disagreement about key issues led to breakdown of negotiations.

Shows an intransitive verbal noun (неслагање, from не слагати се) dropping 'се', retaining its prepositional complement (о кључним питањима), and modified by an adjective (дуготрајно).

  2. Њено неочекивано појављивање изазвало је велику пометњу међу гостима.

Her unexpected appearance caused great confusion among the guests.

Word by Word: Her unexpected appearance caused great confusion among guests.

Derived from the reflexive verb појављивати се. The particle 'се' is dropped, the subject is expressed via a possessive pronoun (њено), and the adverb неочекивано becomes an adjective.

  3. Ово научно откриће омогућило је значајно побољшање квалитета живота свих грађана.

This scientific discovery enabled a significant improvement in the quality of life of all citizens.

Word by Word: This scientific discovery enabled significant improvement of quality of life of all citizens.

Demonstrates a closed-class perfective noun in -ће (откриће) alongside a productive process noun in -ње (побољшање) governing an adnominal genitive complement (квалитета живота).

  4. Пажљиво читање стручне литературе помаже у стицању нових вештина.

Careful reading of professional literature helps in acquiring new skills.

Word by Word: Careful reading of professional literature helps in acquiring of new skills.

Illustrates accusative-to-genitive conversion: читати литературу becomes читање литературе, and стицати вештине becomes стицање вештина.

Common Mistakes

  • Retaining the reflexive particle 'се' with verbal nouns.

Његово смејање се свима је сметало.
    Његово смејање свима је сметало.

The reflexive particle 'се' must always be dropped when turning reflexive verbs into verbal nouns (смејати се → смејање; сећати се → сећање).

  • Retaining verbal accusative case instead of converting to the genitive.

    Читање књигу обогаћује речник.
    Читање књиге обогаћује речник.

Because verbal nouns are nominal heads, direct objects can no longer stay in the accusative case. They must become adnominal genitives (књигу → књиге).

  • Using a verbal noun from a perfective verb where the plain imperfective noun is usual.

Different MeaningПосле прочитања писма, одмах је одговорио.
После читања писма, одмах је одговорио.

"После прочитања писма" is correct and common in formal writing; it stresses that the reading was finished. In plain style, "после читања" or a clause ("пошто је прочитао писмо") is usual.
