Doing Something for a While

Level 5Sounds Like po- za ograničeno traǰan̂e

The prefix по- attaches to imperfective verbs (like activities and postures) to form delimitative verbs. It shifts the verb to the perfective aspect, signaling that the action took place over a bounded, finite period of time ("for a little while" or "for a bit") without implying an inherent finish line or outcome.

How It Works

In Serbian aspectual morphology, the prefix по- performs several roles, but its delimitative function (начин глаголске радње ограниченог трајања) is among the most frequent. In Slavic aspectology, delimitative по- behaves as an outer (superlexical) prefix because it modifies the temporal contour (Aktionsart) of an event without altering the core lexical meaning of the base verb.

1. Base Verb Selection & Attenuative Stacking

  • Delimitative on Imperfective Bases: Pure delimitative по- attaches specifically to imperfective, atelic base verbs to impose temporal boundaries on an otherwise unbounded event:
    • Posture & State: седети → поседети; лежати → полежати; ћутати → поћутати; стајати → поста̀јати (pres. посто̀јӣм). Note that while delimitative поста̀јати is written identically to the secondary imperfective по̀стајати ("to become", pres. по̀ста̄је̄м) in standard unaccented orthography, their pitch accents and present paradigms are distinct. Furthermore, although delimitative посто̀јӣм shares forms on paper with the present tense of посто̀јати ("to exist"), aspectual constraints in context distinguish them easily (delimitative посто̀јӣм is perfective). Nevertheless, analytic phrasings such as мало стајати or постојати мало remain very common in natural conversation.
    • Processes & Activities: причати → попричати; шетати (се) → пошетати (се); певати → попевати; разговарати (ipf.) → поразговарати; чекати → почекати; свирати → посвирати. (Caution: not all activity verbs form delimitative derivatives with по-. In Serbian, читати does not yield a delimitative *почитати [which exists only as an archaic borrowing meaning "to venerate"]; "to read for a while" is expressed analytically as мало читати or with прочитати мало. Similarly, радити does not form *порадити for "working for a while"; порадити is a lexicalized, telic verb meaning "to make an effort toward something", as in порадити на проблему. Delimitative working is rendered analytically: мало радити).
  • Attenuative Prefix Stacking (Polyprefixation): In contrast to pure delimitative formation on imperfective bases, по- can also stack onto an already perfective verb (полипрефиксација), such as по- + [размислити]pf → поразмислити ("reflect a bit") or по- + [распитати се]pf → пораспитати се ("inquire a little"). In standard Serbian grammar, stacking onto perfective verbs represents an attenuative Aktionsart (атенуативни начин радње / умањена мера радње). Rather than delimiting an open temporal continuum, it moderates the intensity, degree, or thoroughness of an already bounded event.

2. Meaning vs. Quantity
Traditional grammars often define this as an action done "in small measure" (у малој мери). However, modern linguistic analyses demonstrate that the prefix's primary semantic role is temporal delimitation. While it often implies brevity, it can naturally combine with longer measured periods (e.g., поседели смо неколико сати — "we sat for several hours"), provided the interval is closed.

3. Morphological & Syntactic Restrictions

  • No secondary imperfectives: Unlike resultative prefixation, delimitative derivations cannot form secondary imperfectives via suffixes like -ивати/-авати. Forms such as *попричавати or *посеђивати do not exist; the base imperfective verb (седети, причати) serves as the ongoing counterpart. (Note that while the form поседати exists in standard dictionaries—both as a distributive perfective from сести meaning "to sit down one by one" and as an imperfective verb from посести meaning "to occupy"—it never functions as an imperfective counterpart to delimitative поседети.)
  • Durational Adverbials: Because delimitative verbs lack an inherent telic target, they take duration expressions in the bare accusative (поседели смо два сата), never telic time frames with за (avoid *поседели смо за два сата). See duration and time to completion for this contrast.

4. Contrasting Uses of по-
Do not confuse this pattern with:

  • Resultative по-: Denotes exhaustion or completion of an object (e.g., попити чај = "to drink up the tea").
  • Ingressive по-: When prefixed to verbs of directed motion, по- marks the start of movement, not duration (e.g., потрчати = "to burst into a run", not *"to run for a bit").
  • Distributive по-: Denotes an action distributed over multiple referents (e.g., попадати = "to fall down one by one").

Examples (4)

  1. Можемо ли накратко да седнемо и попричамо?

Can we sit down for a moment and talk for a bit?

Word by Word: Can we briefly that we-sit-down and talk-for-a-bit?

The verb попричати softens the request by framing the conversation as a brief, bounded chat.

  2. Поседео је пола сата у парку, а онда се вратио на посао.

He sat in the park for half an hour, and then went back to work.

Word by Word: He-sat-a-while is half hour in park, and then self returned to work.

Поседети views the period of sitting as a complete, self-contained event without implying any physical end product.

  3. Почекај овде неколико минута док не обавим овај позив.

Wait here for a few minutes while I make this phone call.

Word by Word: Wait-a-while here several minutes until not I-complete this call.

Почекати expresses waiting across a temporary, delimited time span.

  4. Болела га је глава, па је одлучио да мало полежи пре састанка.

His head hurt, so he decided to lie down for a while before the meeting.

Word by Word: Ached him is head, so is decided that a-little lie-down-for-a-while before meeting.

The delimitative verb полежати (from imperfective лежати) specifies a bounded interval of lying down.

Common Mistakes

  • Using 'за' + accusative instead of the bare accusative for the time duration.

Поседели смо у кафићу за сат времена.
Поседели смо у кафићу сат времена.

Even though delimitative verbs are perfective, they are atelic (they have no finished result or internal endpoint). Therefore, duration must be expressed with bare accusative of time (сат времена), not with 'за' + accusative (which is reserved for the time it takes to achieve a result).

  • Attempting to create secondary imperfective forms from delimitative verbs.

Често волим да попричавам с комшијом.
Често волим да причам с комшијом.

Delimitative verbs with по- are terminal derivations. They do not form secondary imperfectives with suffixes like -авати or -ивати. For ongoing or habitual actions, use the original base verb (причати).

  • Assuming motion verbs with по- denote doing the action for a while.

Потрчао сам мало кроз шуму да се одморим.
Трчао сам мало кроз шуму да се одморим.

With motion verbs, по- typically marks an ingressive meaning (the start of movement, e.g., потрчати = to start running, поћи = to set off). To express running for a while, use the imperfective verb with an adverb like 'мало', or a verb with the prefix про- (e.g., прошетати се).
