A Single Bounded Result

Level 3Sounds Like svršeni vid za ǰedan rezultat

The perfective aspect (свршени вид) views an event from the outside as a complete package. It specifies that an action reached its natural conclusion or produced a discrete, bounded result, rather than being an open-ended process.

How It Works

Serbian verbs inherently express aspect (вид). While the imperfective aspect describes an activity in progress or a habit, the perfective aspect (свршени вид) presents an event in its totality (целовитост) — condensed into a single bounded fact with an achieved endpoint.

1. Pure Resultative Pairs (Видски парови са префиксом)
To express a single completed outcome, Serbian commonly derives a perfective verb by adding an aspectual prefix to an imperfective base:

  • читати (to read) → прочитати (to read completely / finish reading)
  • кувати (to cook) → скувати (to cook completely / prepare a dish)
  • радити (to do, work) → урадити (to do, accomplish, finish)
  • писати (to write) → написати (to write down / finish writing)

In these true resultative pairs, the prefix serves solely to bound the action and mark completion without changing the basic lexical meaning.

2. Sound Changes in Prefixation
When prefixes attach to verb stems, regular phonetic rules apply:

  • Voice assimilation: Prefixes ending in voiced consonants devoice before voiceless sounds (e.g., из- + писати → исписати).
  • Prefix vocalization (вокализација префикса): An -а- is inserted when a consonant-final prefix meets an awkward consonant cluster to ensure smooth pronunciation (e.g., из- + брати → изабрати, с- + звати → сазвати).

3. Crucial Syntactic Boundaries

  • No phasal verbs: You can never use a perfective verb after verbs like почети, наставити, or престати. These require an imperfective verb (e.g., почео сам да читам, never *почео сам да прочитам).
  • No standalone present: A perfective present cannot describe an ongoing event happening right now in an independent clause. For real-time ongoing actions, use the imperfective present.
  • Duration vs. Boundary: Perfective does not mean 'instantaneous'. An event taking years is still perfective if presented as a single bounded unit: Провео је три године у Београду ('He spent three years in Belgrade').

Examples (4)

  1. Прочитао сам твој чланак и мислим да је одличан.

I read [finished reading] your article, and I think it is excellent.

Word by Word: Read I-am your article and I-think that it-is excellent.

The perfective verb прочитао сам indicates that the entire article was read from start to finish.

  2. Мајка је скувала ручак за пола сата.

Mother cooked lunch in half an hour.

Word by Word: Mother is cooked lunch in half hour.

Скувала profiles the attained result: the meal reached completion and was ready to eat.

  3. Јуче смо коначно купили нови стан.

Yesterday we finally bought a new apartment.

Word by Word: Yesterday are-we finally bought new apartment.

Купили presents a single, self-contained transaction that took place as an accomplished event.

  4. Написао сам домаћи задатак пре вечере.

I wrote [finished writing] my homework before dinner.

Word by Word: Written I-am homework assignment before dinner.

Using the prefix на- on написао confirms that the homework was brought to full completion.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the imperfective past when a finished result was attained.

Писао сам писмо и послао га поштом.
Написао сам писмо и послао га поштом.

English uses 'wrote' for both ongoing activity and completion. In Serbian, 'писао сам' merely means you spent time writing, while 'написао сам' is required to show the letter was actually finished.

  • Using a perfective verb directly after verbs of beginning, continuing, or stopping.

Почео сам да прочитам књигу синоћ.
Почео сам да читам књигу синоћ.

Verbs like почети (to start) or престати (to stop) focus on a phase of an ongoing process, so they strictly govern imperfective complements.

  • Using the perfective present to describe an action occurring right now in an independent clause.

    Сада напишем поруку пријатељу.
    Сада пишем поруку пријатељу.

A perfective present cannot express an ongoing real-time event. For what is happening right now, you must use the imperfective present (пишем).
