Prefixes and Event Shape

Level 5Sounds Like prefiksi i način vršen̂a radn̂e

In Serbian, attaching a prefix to an imperfective verb does more than create a perfective counterpart: it frequently alters the internal contour or manner of the action (Aktionsart / начин вршења радње). Common event shapes include delimitative (doing something for a bit: по-), ingressive (bursting into an action: за-), and saturative (doing something to satisfaction: на-...-се).

How It Works

In standard Serbian grammar, verbal prefixation performs three distinct functions: (1) pure aspectual pairing (aspect pairs with prefixes, e.g., писати → написати), where the lexical meaning is preserved while shifting from imperfective to perfective; (2) lexical derivation (lexical meaning of verb prefixes, e.g., писати → потписати, преписати), which produces entirely new lexemes; and (3) Aktionsart (начин глаголске радње), which modifies the temporal contour, intensity, distribution, or boundary conditions of the predicate.

Key Aktionsart Categories:

  • Delimitative (делимитативни): Signals carrying out an activity for a brief, limited stretch of time without aiming for a natural endpoint. Typically uses по-, од-, or про- (e.g., поседети 'to sit for a while', попричати 'to chat a bit', одспавати / поспавати 'to nap / sleep for a bit', прошетати 'to take a walk'). Distinguish delimitative поспавати from standard distributive поспати (e.g., деца су поспала, сви су поспали 'they fell asleep one by one / all fell asleep'), alongside the polyprefixal distributive verb позаспати (distributive по- prefixed onto the ingressive verb заспати, indicating that multiple participants fell asleep one after another).
  • Ingressive / Inchoative (ингресивни / инхоативни / почетни): Encodes entering or suddenly bursting into an action. Frequently uses за-, по-, or про- (e.g., заплакати 'to burst into tears', запевати 'to start singing', потрчати 'to break into a run', проговорити 'to start speaking / break silence').
  • Saturative (сатуративни): Denotes carrying out an action to complete satisfaction, personal fullness, or exhaustion. It most frequently pairs the prefix на- with the reflexive clitic се (e.g., најести се 'to eat one's fill', наспавати се 'to get a good sleep', начитати се 'to read to one's heart's content'), but ис-...-се is also productively used to mark satiation and exhaustive emotional release (e.g., исплакати се 'to have a good cry', испричати се 'to talk one's fill').
  • Perdurative (пердуративни): Encodes sustaining an activity through a specified temporal interval, commonly marked by про- or пре- (e.g., проборавити 'to spend time residing', проседети 'to spend time sitting', преноћити 'to spend the night', презимити 'to overwinter'). Syntactically, perdurative verbs typically take an accusative of duration (accusative for duration and extent), as in проседети цео дан or преноћити три ноћи.
  • Terminative / Finitive (терминативни / финитивни): Marks bringing an incomplete activity to its absolute conclusion or final limit, predominantly via до- (e.g., дочитати 'to finish reading to the end', дописати 'to finish writing / write in full', доградити 'to finish building').
  • Cumulative (кумулативни): Marks gradual accumulation through repeated activity, typically using на- (e.g., накупити 'to amass', набрати 'to pick a quantity of'). Syntactically, cumulative verbs regularly license the partitive genitive (partitive genitive) rather than a standard accusative direct object (e.g., набрати цвећа / јагода 'to pick some flowers / strawberries').
  • Attenuative (атенуативни): Denotes reduced intensity or partial execution, often using при- or под- (e.g., прикочити 'to tap the brakes', подгрејати 'to warm up slightly').

Morpho-Phonological Adjustments:
Prefixes undergo regular sound changes upon attachment:

  • Voice assimilation (једначење по звучности): Voiced consonants devoice before voiceless consonants, and vice versa (e.g., из- + пећи → испећи; од- + хранити → отхранити; под- + писати → потписати).
  • Place assimilation (једначење по месту творбе): Dental sibilants /s/ and /z/ shift to postalveolar /š/ and /ž/ before palatals (e.g., с- + чепати → шчепати).
  • Combined & multi-step changes: In prefixes ending in -з (such as из- and раз-), voice assimilation triggers first, followed by place assimilation, and optionally simplification of double consonants: из- + чистити → исчистити → ишчистити; раз- + ширити → рас-ширити → раш-ширити → раширити.
  • Fleeting 'a' (непостојано а): An epenthetic -а- surfaces before heavy consonant clusters (e.g., с- → са- in сакупити; из- → иза- in изабрати).

Lexical Constraints:
Unlike inflectional endings, Aktionsart prefixes cannot be attached indiscriminately to every verb. Each prefix-stem combination is lexically conditioned and idiomatically conventionalized.

Examples (5)

  1. Хајде да попричамо на миру пре него што донесемо коначну одлуку.

Let's have a brief chat in peace before we make a final decision.

Word by Word: Come let-us-chat in peace before than what we-bring final decision.

The prefix 'по-' gives 'попричати' a delimitative reading: chatting for a short, informal stretch of time rather than narrating a full account.

  2. После неколико непроспаваних ноћи, коначно сам се поштено наспавао.

After several sleepless nights, I finally got a good, full night of sleep.

Word by Word: After several unslept nights, finally am REFL properly satiation-slept.

The circumfix pattern 'на-...-се' expresses personal satiation (getting one's fill of sleep).

  3. Када је чула тужну вест, само је ћутала неколико секунди, а онда је нагло заплакала.

When she heard the sad news, she stayed silent for a few seconds, and then suddenly burst into tears.

Word by Word: When AUX heard sad news, only AUX kept-silent several seconds, and then AUX suddenly inchoative-cried.

The prefix 'за-' marks an inchoative/ingressive boundary, focusing on the immediate inception of crying.

  4. Проседео је цео дан у библиотеци како би дочитао ту обимну студију.

He spent the entire day sitting in the library in order to finish reading that extensive study.

Word by Word: Perdurative-sat AUX whole day in library how would-3sg finitive-read that voluminous study.

'Проседети' is a perdurative verb taking an accusative duration complement ('цео дан'), while 'дочитати' is finitive/terminative with 'до-', marking bringing reading to completion.

  5. Деца су у шуми набрала пуну корпу шумских јагода.

The children picked a full basket of wild strawberries in the forest.

Word by Word: Children AUX in forest cumulative-picked full basket of-forest strawberries.

The prefix 'на-' in 'набрати' denotes the cumulative gathering of a quantitative batch of items.

Common Mistakes

  • Using a delimitative verb like 'попричати' to report the transmission of an entire story or complete event.

Попричао ми је цео догађај од почетка до краја.
Испричао ми је цео догађај од почетка до краја.

'Попричати' means to chat for a while and cannot take a direct object denoting a story. The neutral resultative partner for recounting information is 'испричати'.

  • Omitting the reflexive clitic 'се' with saturative verbs built with 'на-'.

Јутрос сам добро наспавао после дугог пута.
Јутрос сам се добро наспавао после дугог пута.

The saturative Aktionsart ('на-...-се') obligatorily requires the reflexive particle 'се' to express that the subject reached satiety or fullness.

  • Combining the phase verb 'почети' with an already inchoative prefixed verb.

Беба је одједном почела да заплаче.
    Беба је одједном заплакала.

Using 'почети' with an ingressive verb like 'заплакати' is pleonastic. Either use the prefixed inchoative verb alone ('заплакала је') or combine 'почети' with an imperfective stem ('почела је да плаче').

Learn This First

Before exploring how prefixes modify the contour or manner of an action (Aktionsart, such as starting an action, doing it for a short time, or performing it to completion/excess), learners must be comfortable with basic aspect pairs formed by prefixation and the concept of bounded, completed events.
