не бих / не би / не бисмо
Negative Conditional
The negative conditional (одречни потенцијал) expresses actions that would not happen under certain circumstances, polite refusals, or preventive actions ('so that ... wouldn't'). It combines the separate negative particle 'не' with the conditional auxiliary of 'бити' and an active past participle.
How It Works
The negative conditional (одрични потенцијал) is one of the most practical and frequent modal constructions in Serbian. It consists of the negated auxiliary of потенцијал (historically from the aorist of бити) alongside the active past participle.
1. Core Functions
- Hypothetical and Counterfactual Situations: Denotes what would not happen if conditions were different (often in clauses paired with кад бих / када би).
Пример: Кад би падала киша, не бисмо ишли у парк. (If it were raining, we wouldn't go to the park.) - Polite Hesitation and Softened Refusal: Softens direct statements or disagreements so you sound polite rather than confrontational.
Пример: Не бих знао тачан одговор. (I wouldn't know the exact answer.) - Preventive / Purposive Clauses ('in order not to' / 'lest'): Introduced by да or како to express an intention to avoid something.
Пример: Пожурио је да не би закаснио. (He hurried so that he wouldn't be late.)
2. Word Order, Initial Placement, and Clitics
Unlike affirmative conditional auxiliaries (бих, би, бисмо), which are unstressed enclitics and strictly cannot start a sentence or clause (governed by second-position rules), the negative sequence не бих / не би / не бисмо can freely appear right at the beginning of a clause because the negative particle не carries word stress: Не бих то урадио! (I wouldn't do that!) vs. *Бих то урадио (unacceptable; must be Урадио бих то).
When other enclitics are present in a clause starting with a negative conditional auxiliary, they attach immediately to the negative auxiliary host following standard clitic ordering (dative pronoun before accusative/genitive, followed by reflexive се) before the participle: Не бих му се мешао у посао (I wouldn't interfere in his business).
3. Orthography vs. Pronunciation
In standard Serbian orthography, the negative particle не is strictly written as an independent word before the auxiliary: не бих, не би, не бисмо, не бисте. In traditional neo-Štokavian pronunciation, the stress may retract onto the proclitic as a short-rising accent in multisyllabic units (нѐ бисмо, нѐ бисте) or a short-falling accent in monosyllables (не̏ бих, не̏ би), although keeping the stress on the auxiliary (не бѝсмо) is also widespread in contemporary standard Serbian. Even though it sounds like a single accentual unit, do not fuse them in writing.
4. Standard Forms vs. Colloquial Habits
In spoken Serbian, you will frequently hear native speakers use uninflected би across persons (ја не би, ми не би, ви не би). In standard Serbian, you should always inflect the auxiliary properly: 1st person singular takes бих, 1st person plural takes бисмо, and 2nd person plural takes бисте. Note that standard Serbian intentionally uses не би for the 3rd person plural conditional (e.g., они не би дошли); forms such as бише belong strictly to the 3rd-person plural of the simple aorist tense, and using them in the conditional is non-standard.

- Кад бих имао више времена, не бих седео код куће.
If I had more time, I would not sit at home.
Word by Word: When would-have I-had more time, not would sit-I at home.
Hypothetical condition showing first-person singular 'не бих' paired with the masculine singular participle 'седео'.
- Не бих желела да вам сметам, па ћу се вратити касније.
I wouldn't want to disturb you, so I'll come back later.
Word by Word: Not would want-Feminine that to-you I-disturb, so will-I myself return later.
Softened polite statement using 'не бих' with a feminine singular participle 'желела'.
- Не бих му се мешао у посао без доброг разлога.
I wouldn't interfere in his business without a good reason.
Word by Word: Not would-I to-him myself interfere into business without good reason.
Illustrates clitic order: the pronominal clitic 'му' and reflexive 'се' directly follow the clause-initial negative auxiliary 'не бих'.
- Пожурили смо како не бисмо закаснили на последњи воз.
We hurried in order not to miss the last train.
Word by Word: Hurried-we are how not would-we be-late onto last train.
Preventive clause introduced by 'како', using first-person plural 'не бисмо закаснили'.
- Они не би пристали на такве услове без договора.
They would not agree to such conditions without an agreement.
Word by Word: They not would agree onto such conditions without agreement.
Third-person plural subject 'они' taking standard invariant 'не би' and masculine plural participle 'пристали'.
Common Mistakes
Fusing 'не' and the auxiliary into a single word (*небих, *неби, *небисмо)
Ја небих волео да идем тамо сам.Ја не бих волео да идем тамо сам.Even though speech stress retracts onto 'не', orthography requires 'не' to be written separately from all forms of 'бих/би/бисмо'. Only 'немам', 'нећу', 'нисам', and 'немој' fuse with 'не'.
Using colloquial invariant 'не би' across all persons instead of inflecting for 1st person
Ми не би дошли без позива.Ми не бисмо дошли без позива.While widespread in informal casual speech, standard grammar requires 'бих' for the first-person singular and 'бисмо' for the first-person plural.
Using a masculine participle when the speakers are all women.
Different MeaningМи не бисмо остали до касно.Ми не бисмо остале до касно.The active participle agrees in gender and number with the subject. When the speakers are all women, use the feminine plural '-ле': 'Ми не бисмо остале до касно.' The masculine plural 'остали' is correct for men or a mixed group.
