Softening a Request

Level 3Sounds Like potenciǰal u l̂ubaznoǰ molbi

Instead of issuing a direct command with the imperative or a plain present question, use the potential (conditional mood) to make your requests softer, gentler, and more deferential. Phrases like Да ли бисте могли...? ('Could you...?') or Замолио бих вас... ('I would like to ask you...') frame an action hypothetically, offering the listener polite space to comply comfortably.

How It Works

When speaking to colleagues, officials, clients, or strangers, an imperative can sound overly blunt even if accompanied by молим вас ('please'). Serbian uses the conditional mood independently in a main clause to turn direct demands into considerate proposals.

1. Structural Frames
There are three primary ways to construct a softened request:

  • Да ли question: Begins with да ли, followed immediately by the conditional auxiliary in second position: Да ли бисте нам помогли? ('Would you help us?')
  • Inverted question with ли: Places the auxiliary clause-initially, directly followed by the question particle ли: Бисте ли ми рекли...? ('Would you tell me...?')
  • First-person request frame: Uses a 1st-person conditional form (matching the speaker's gender: замолио бих for a male speaker or замолила бих for a female speaker) followed by a да-clause to soften the speaker's own petition: Замолио бих / Замолила бих вас да сачекате. ('I would ask you to wait.')

2. Subject Agreement and Polite Ви
Remember that the active past participle agrees in gender and number with the subject. When addressing an interlocutor with the honorific plural учтиво ви, both the active past participle and any accompanying predicate adjective must follow plural agreement (conventionally masculine plural: -ли for the participle, and -и for adjectives, e.g., били and љубазни from stem љубазн- + -и): Госпођо, да ли бисте били љубазни... (neither participle *била nor adjective *љубазна).

3. Register and Natural Everyday Contexts
This pattern is standard in formal, administrative, professional, and customer service settings. In casual day-to-day interactions (such as ordering at a local bakery or chatting with close acquaintances), an imperative with молим вас or a modal present tense (Можете ли...?) is perfectly polite and natural; leaning excessively on the conditional in very casual situations can sound slightly distant or stiff.

Examples (5)

  1. Да ли бисте могли да ми кажете колико је сати?

Could you tell me what time it is?

Word by Word: Whether would-you could that to-me tell how-much is hours?

An addressee-oriented question using the polite 'Ви' auxiliary 'бисте' with the modal verb 'моћи'.

  2. Бисте ли ми додали со, молим Вас?

Would you pass me the salt, please?

Word by Word: Would-you question-particle to-me passed salt, pray you?

Shows the fronted auxiliary pattern with the question particle 'ли' in polite table conversation.

  3. Замолио бих Вас да сачекате неколико минута.

I would ask you to wait a few minutes.

Word by Word: Asked would-I you that you-wait a-few minutes.

A speaker-oriented request softening the speaker's own volition using the 1st person masculine singular 'замолио бих'.

  4. Да ли би могао да ми помогнеш око овог задатка?

Could you help me with this assignment?

Word by Word: Whether would could that to-me you-help around this assignment?

An informal request to a friend using the 2nd person singular 'ти' ('би могао').

  5. Хтела бих да Вас питам нешто у вези са послом.

I would like to ask you something regarding the job.

Word by Word: Wanted would-I that you I-ask something in connection with job.

A female speaker using the 1st person feminine singular conditional ('хтела бих') to introduce an inquiry gently.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the invariant colloquial 'би' for all persons instead of standard forms.

Да ли би ви могли да ми помогнете?
Да ли бисте ви могли да ми помогнете?

In standard Serbian, particularly in polite and formal speech, the auxiliary verb must decline according to person: 1st sg 'бих', 2nd pl 'бисте'. 'Би' belongs only to 2nd/3rd person singular and 3rd person plural.

  • Using a singular feminine participle when addressing a woman with polite 'Ви'.

Госпођо, да ли бисте могла да погледате овај документ?
Госпођо, да ли бисте могли да погледате овај документ?

When using the formal address 'Ви', compound verb constructions require grammatical plural agreement on the participle ('могли'), even if the single person addressed is a woman.

  • Misplacing the clitic particle 'ли' after other unstressed words.

    Бисте ми ли казали пут?
    Бисте ли ми казали пут?

When the auxiliary is fronted to begin a question, the question clitic 'ли' must immediately follow it, preceding any dative or accusative pronominal clitics like 'ми'.
