кад бих / када би

Imagined Situations with Kad

Level 4Sounds Like kad bih; kada bi

Although кад or када normally means 'when', combining it with the conditional mood forms hypothetical conditions meaning 'if (I were to / if I did)'. It sets up an imagined premise in the present or future.

How It Works

In Serbian, subordinate conditional clauses can be introduced using several subjunctors depending on the reality of the condition. While beginners learn that кад means 'when', using it with the conditional mood (потенцијал) overrides any temporal meaning and creates hypothetical and counterfactual 'if' clauses.

1. Meaning and Function:

  • Hypothetical / Potential scenarios: Imagining a present or future event that is uncertain, speculative, or improbable (equivalent to the English Second Conditional: If I were to win...).
  • Present counterfactual states: Imagining an alternative to current reality (Кад бих био млађи... = 'If I were younger... [which I am not]').

2. Word Order, Clitic Placement, and Spelling:
The conditional auxiliary forms (бих, би, би, бисмо, бисте, би) are enclitics. In standard Serbian syntax, verbal clitics in subordinate clauses must strictly occupy the second position directly following the conjunction: кад бих, кад би, кад бисмо, кад бисте (e.g., Кад би Петар дошао..., never *Кад Петар би дошао...).

For negation, the negative particle не precedes the auxiliary. Crucially, standard Serbian orthography requires writing them as separate words (кад не бих, кад не би, кад не бисмо, кад не бисте); spelling them as a single fused word (*небих, *неби) is a common error and is strictly incorrect.

3. Contrasting With Other Conditional Patterns:

  • Кад vs. Ако: Open, realistic conditions in the future use ако + present (Ако имам времена, доћи ћу = 'If I have time, I will come'). While ако can also take the potential mood to frame a condition as hypothetical (Ако бих имао времена...), the construction кад би is dedicated exclusively to hypothetical and counterfactual situations and cannot express an open, factual condition.
  • Present vs. Past Unreal: While кад би handles present counterfactuals and future hypotheses, unreal conditions strictly about the past require да + перфекат (Да сам знао, дошао бих = 'If I had known, I would have come'). You cannot use кад би to talk about what failed to happen in the past.

Examples (4)

  1. Кад бих имала много новца, путовала бих по свету.

If I had a lot of money, I would travel around the world.

Word by Word: When would-have I-had much money, traveled-would I around world.

A classic daydream scenario. The conjunction 'кад' pairs with the 1st person singular conditional 'бих имала', matched by 'путовала бих' in the result clause.

  2. Кад бисмо пожурили, стигли бисмо на почетак представе.

If we hurried, we would make it for the start of the show.

Word by Word: When would-have-we hurried, arrived-would we at beginning of-show.

Expresses an open hypothetical possibility in the near future using the 1st person plural 'бисмо'.

  3. Шта би урадио кад би ти провалник упао у кућу?

What would you do if a burglar broke into your house?

Word by Word: What would-you did when would to-you burglar burst into house?

A speculative 'what-if' question where the condition clause follows the main question clause.

  4. Кад не би падала киша, могли бисмо да шетамо по парку.

If it weren't raining, we could take a walk in the park.

Word by Word: When not would fallen rain, could-would we that we-walk around park.

Shows negative hypothetical condition ('кад не би'). The premise is contrary to the present weather.

Common Mistakes

  • Using invariable 'би' for all grammatical persons in standard Serbian.

Кад би ја имао времена, дошао би.
Кад бих ја имао времена, дошао бих.

Although colloquial speech often collapses the auxiliary into 'би' everywhere, standard Serbian requires person agreement: 'бих' for 1st person singular and 'бисмо' for 1st person plural.

  • 'Кад' with the present says 'when', not 'if'.

Different MeaningКад имам времена сутра, доћи ћу.
Ако будем имао времена сутра, доћи ћу.

'Кад имам времена сутра, доћи ћу' is correct and means 'when I have time tomorrow, I will come', treating it as expected. To make it a real open condition ('if I have time'), use 'ако': 'Ако будем имао времена сутра, доћи ћу'.

  • Using 'кад би' to express an unreal condition in the past.

Кад бих знао јуче, дошао бих.
Да сам знао јуче, дошао бих.

'Кад бих' cannot refer to an event that failed to happen in the past. Past counterfactual conditions require 'да' + the perfect tense ('да сам знао').
