не би ли

Hoping to Achieve Something

Level 5Sounds Like ne bi li

The conjunction не би ли (written as three separate words) introduces a purpose clause with a nuance of fervent hope, tentative effort, or uncertain outcome ('in the hope that...', 'in an attempt to...'). Although it contains the negative word не, the clause always expresses a positive, desired goal.

How It Works

In Serbian syntax, purpose clauses (намерне реченице) express the intention or goal behind an action. While да + present represents everyday, neutral intent ('I went to buy milk'), не би ли introduces a distinct modal coloring, conventionally paraphrased in standard descriptive grammars as у нади да ће… ('in the hope that...').

1. Affirmative Polarity:
Learners are often misled by the presence of не, assuming it acts like English 'lest' or 'so as not to'. In reality, не би ли expresses a desired positive outcome that the subject strives to reach.
• Пожурио је не би ли стигао на време. = 'He hurried in hopes of arriving on time.' (He wants to arrive on time).
• To express a preventive aim ('lest / so as not to'), standard Serbian uses да не: Пожурио је да не закасни.

2. Morphological and Syntactic Structure:
The predicate in the purpose clause is in the потенцијал (potential mood), formed by the inflected forms of the auxiliary verb бити (бих, би, бисмо, etc.) combined with the particle ли and the active past participle:

  • 1st Person Singular: Пожурио сам не бих ли га затекао код куће. ('I hurried in the hope that I would catch him at home.')
  • 3rd Person Singular: Он запали шибицу не би ли огрејао прсте. ('He struck a match hoping to warm his fingers.')
  • 1st Person Plural: Прегледали смо списе не бисмо ли нашли грешку. ('We checked the files hoping to find the mistake.')
  • 3rd Person Plural: Претражили су собу не би ли нашли кључ. ('They searched the room hoping to find the key.')

3. Register and Tone:
While entirely productive and natural in modern Serbian, не би ли carries an expressive, elevated tone. It is particularly common in journalism, essays, storytelling, and thoughtful conversation when describing difficult or tentative endeavors.

Examples (4)

  1. Он запали шибицу не би ли мало огрејао промрзле прсте.

He struck a match in the hope of warming his freezing fingers a bit.

Word by Word: He struck match not would whether a-little warmed frozen fingers.

Here, 'не би ли' introduces the tentative, uncertain goal of warming his cold hands.

  2. Прегледали су дневник, не би ли тамо нашли решење мистерије.

They examined the diary, hoping they might find the solution to the mystery there.

Word by Word: Examined they diary, not would whether there found solution of-mystery.

The third-person plural subject takes 'не би ли' followed by the plural participle 'нашли'.

  3. Пожурио сам не бих ли га затекао код куће.

I hurried in an attempt to catch him at home.

Word by Word: Hurried I-am not would-1sg whether him caught at home.

Demonstrates the normative standard 1st-person singular form 'не бих ли' with masculine participle 'затекао'.

  4. Отишли смо раније не бисмо ли избегли гужву у саобраћају.

We left earlier in the hope that we would avoid the traffic jam.

Word by Word: Left we-are earlier not would-1pl whether avoided jam in traffic.

The normative 1st-person plural form 'не бисмо ли' agrees with the subject 'ми'.

Common Mistakes

  • Using 'не би ли' with an undesired outcome (mistaking it for 'lest' or 'so as not to').

Пожурио је не би ли закаснио на воз.
Пожурио је да не закасни на воз.

Despite containing 'не', 'не би ли' always expresses the desired positive outcome. If your goal is preventive ('lest / so as not to'), use 'да не' + present tense.

  • Using a present-tense verb instead of the active l-participle.

Дошао је не би ли види шта се дешава.
Дошао је не би ли видео шта се дешава.

Because 'би' is an auxiliary of the potential mood, the main lexical verb must always be in the active past participle form ('видео', not the present 'види').

  • Failing to inflect the auxiliary in 1st person in standard writing.

Позвао сам га не би ли сазнао истину.
Позвао сам га не бих ли сазнао истину.

In normative standard Serbian, the conditional auxiliary retains personal inflection: use 'не бих ли' with 1st person singular ('ја') and 'не бисмо ли' with 1st person plural ('ми').

Learn This First

The connective 'не би ли' ('in hopes of', 'so as to perhaps') combines the negated conditional auxiliary 'не би' with the question particle 'ли' to express an attempt or hopeful purpose. To understand and use it properly, learners need familiarity with the negative conditional auxiliary forms, the interrogative particle 'ли', and basic conditional purpose clauses ('да би').
