Earlier Actions With a Verbal Adverb

Level 4Sounds Like glagolski prilog prošli

The past verbal adverb (глаголски прилог прошли) is an invariant participle ending in -вши or -авши. It indicates an action that happened prior to the main clause (equivalent to English 'having done...'). It belongs primarily to formal, journalistic, and literary registers.

How It Works

The глаголски прилог прошли is a non-finite, indeclinable adverbial form (прост, неличан глаголски облик) formed almost exclusively from perfective verbs. It condenses a subordinate clause into a compact participial phrase.

1. Semantic Functions:
While expressing anteriority (relative past), it sets up different adverbial relationships:
• Time: Угледавши полицију, побегао је. ('Having spotted the police, he fled.')
• Cause: Сазнавши истину, прекинуо је контакт. ('Having learned the truth, he cut off contact.')
• Condition: In tandem with a future tense clause: Применивши овај метод, решићете проблем. ('Having applied this method, you will solve the issue.')

2. Relative, Not Absolute Tense:
Although called 'past' (прошли), its tense is relative. It anchors itself to the tense of the finite predicate. It can precede an event in the past, present, or future.

3. Morphological Nuances & Irregularities:
• In verbs ending in -сти with underlying dental stems (д, т), the dental consonant drops before attaching the suffix -вши: пасти (root пад-) → павши; срести (root срет-) → сревши; појести (root појед-) → појевши.
• The verb ићи and its prefixed compounds (including наћи < *на-ити, доћи, отићи) take the stem in -ш-: доћи → дошавши, наћи → нашавши, изаћи → изашавши.
• Other verbs ending in -ћи retain their velar stem with -авши (e.g., помоћи → помогавши, стићи → стигавши) or frequently utilize their parallel -нути stem variant with -нувши (e.g., стигнувши, подигнувши, дигнувши).
• Negation is written separately with standard perfective stems: не сазнавши, не нашавши, не стигавши.
• While бивши is most widely used in modern Serbian as a declinable adjective meaning 'former' (e.g., бивши председник), it also survives in formal and literary registers as the past verbal adverb of бити (e.g., бивши упозорен...).

4. Style and Register:
In everyday spoken Serbian, this form is virtually obsolete. Spontaneous dialogue favors coordinate clauses or subordinate clauses with conjunctions like пошто, чим, or када.

  1. Угледавши полицију, бегунац је бацио торбу и побегао.

Having spotted the police, the fugitive dropped the bag and fled.

Word by Word: Having-spotted police, fugitive is dropped bag and fled.

Formed from the perfective verb угледати (угледа- + -вши). Both actions are performed by the same subject (бегунац).

  2. Завршивши напоран рад на пројекту, цео тим је отишао на прославу.

Having finished the arduous work on the project, the whole team went to celebrate.

Word by Word: Having-finished arduous work on project, whole team is gone on celebration.

Завршити has a vowel stem (заврши-), so it takes the suffix -вши.

  3. Не нашавши кључеве у џепу, позвао је комшиницу у помоћ.

Not having found the keys in his pocket, he called the neighbor for help.

Having arrived home, he immediately lay down to sleep.

Word by Word: Having-come home, immediately is lay-down to sleep.

Illustrates the irregular stem alternation with -ш- for motion verbs derived from ићи (доћи → дошавши).

  5. Прочитавши овај приручник, лако ћете положити испит.

Having read this handbook, you will easily pass the exam.

Word by Word: Having-read this handbook, easily will-you pass exam.

Shows the relative nature of the tense: an anterior action preceding a future main predicate.

Common Mistakes

  • Dangling modifier: using the verbal adverb when the subjects of both actions are different.

Стигавши на станицу, воз је већ отишао.
Кад смо стигли на станицу, воз је већ отишао.

The verbal adverb must share its subject with the main clause. In the incorrect sentence, 'воз' (train) is the grammatical subject, which absurdly implies the train arrived at the station and left itself.

  • Using the present stem instead of the past stem for verbs in -ићи.

Дођавши у канцеларију, позвао је клијента.
Дошавши у канцеларију, позвао је клијента.

Motion verbs ending in -ићи form this adverb using the root stem in -ш- (дошавши, отишавши, изашавши), never the present stem in -ђ- (*дођавши).

  • Inflecting the verbal adverb for gender or number as if it were an adjective.

    Прочитавша писмо, Ана је заплакала.
    Прочитавши писмо, Ана је заплакала.

Verbal adverbs are completely indeclinable. They never take gender or number endings like *-вша or *-вши.
