Compact Participial Descriptions
Condensed participial constructions (кондензоване партиципске конструкције) are sophisticated syntactic shortcuts. They compress an adnominal relative clause (such as који је потписан) into a compact participial phrase (потписан) that directly modifies a head noun, agreeing with it in gender, number, and case.
How It Works
In formal, journalistic, and administrative Serbian prose, participial condensation is occasionally employed for informational brevity. However, normative grammars emphasize that Serbian stylistically prefers finite relative clauses or reflexive passive constructions; heavy participial phrases often feel like unnatural calques and should be used with caution.
1. Structural Conditions and Mechanism
In standard Serbian normative grammar, adnominal participial condensation of relative clauses is strictly restricted to transitive verbs using passive past verbal adjectives (трпни глаголски придев). Active past participles (радни глаголски придев) cannot form participial modifier clauses with dependents (*путници стигли јуче, *човек пао с коња are ungrammatical).
Condensation operates on relative clauses where the head noun corresponds to the patient/theme of the verb:
- Transformation to Passive Participle: When condensing an active transitive relative clause, the active predicate is converted into a трпни глаголски придев. The relative pronoun is removed, and the participle agrees directly with the head noun in gender, number, and case: одлуке које је одбор донео на седници → одлуке донете на седници; роман који смо прочитали → прочитани роман.
- Underlying Passive Clauses: Dropping који and the auxiliary verb (је / су) leaves the passive verbal adjective: документи који су потписани на седници → документи потписани на седници; одлуке које су донете на седници → одлуке донете на седници.
- No Oblique Condensation: Clauses where који serves as an oblique prepositional argument (e.g., књига о којој смо говорили) can never undergo participial condensation.
- Avoid Calqued Agents: Agent phrases such as од стране + генитив are considered bureaucratic barbarisms in standard Serbian and should be omitted.
- Ensure full adjectival agreement (case, number, and gender) between the participle and its head noun.
2. Constraints on Verbal Aspect and Forms
- Verbal Aspect: Perfective verbs (свршени вид, e.g., донет, усвојен, потписан) are standard for expressing completed, resultant states. However, imperfective verbs (несвршени вид) are also fully grammatical and common when denoting continuous, iterative, or prolonged processes with duration or temporal adjuncts (e.g., мост грађен пет година, план припреман месецима, питања постављана током расправе). Isolated imperfective participles without such modifiers (e.g., *кућа грађена у центру) remain stylistically unnatural and are usually expressed via finite or reflexive clauses (кућа која се гради у центру).
- No Active Participial Clauses: While isolated intransitive active past participles can function as lexicalized prenominal adjectives (e.g., опало лишће, пропали план), active participles cannot take postnominal dependents or head attributive participial phrases (*путници пристигли јутарњим возом is ungrammatical; use путници који су стигли јутарњим возом).
- Verbal Adverbs vs. Participles: Forms ending in -ући / -ећи (глаголски прилог садашњи) are invariant adverbs modifying the matrix clause's verb, not adnominal attributes modifying nouns.
3. Position and Punctuation
- Postnominal Placement (Natural): Condensed participial constructions naturally follow the head noun (e.g., Сви радови предати после рока биће одбијени).
- Prenominal Placement (Restricted): While a single participial adjective can stand before a noun (усвојени предлог), extended prenominal participial constructions containing dependents (such as *јуче на седници усвојени предлог) are unidiomatic calques and must be avoided.
- Restrictive vs. Non-restrictive Punctuation: Defining participial phrases carry no commas, whereas non-restrictive appositive phrases providing parenthetical detail are enclosed within commas (e.g., Овај закон, усвојен после дуге расправе, ступа на снагу у јануару).
Examples (4)
- Сви документи потписани током преговора биће објављени сутра.
All documents signed during the negotiations will be published tomorrow.
Word by Word: All documents signed during negotiations will-be published tomorrow.
The passive participle 'потписани' agrees with 'документи' (nominative masculine plural), condensing the relative clause 'који су потписани током преговора'.
- Предлог закона, усвојен након дуге расправе, ступа на снагу следећег месеца.
The draft bill, adopted after a long debate, comes into force next month.
Word by Word: Draft of-bill, adopted after long debate, steps onto force next month.
An appositive (non-restrictive) condensed modifier set off by commas. Equivalent to 'који је усвојен након дуге расправе'.
- Све мере усвојене на седници владе ступају на снагу одмах.
All measures adopted at the government session take effect immediately.
Word by Word: All measures adopted at session of-government step onto force immediately.
The passive participle 'усвојене' condenses the relative clause 'које су усвојене на седници владе' and agrees with 'мере' in gender, number, and case.
- Разговарали смо о решењима предложеним на претходном састанку.
We discussed the solutions proposed at the previous meeting.
Word by Word: We-spoke about solutions proposed at previous meeting.
The postpositive participle matches the locative plural noun: 'решењима' → 'предложеним'.
Common Mistakes
Using an active past participle with a direct object to modify a noun
Студент прочитао ову књигу положио је испит.Студент који је прочитао ову књигу положио је испит.Active transitive verbs cannot form condensed participial phrases in Serbian. To express an active event with an accusative complement, you must use a full relative clause with 'који'.
Failing to inflect the postpositive participle to match an oblique case
Расправљали су о мерама предложени на састанку.Расправљали су о мерама предложеним на састанку.A passive participle modifying a noun must decline into the exact same case. Here, 'о мерама' is locative plural feminine, so the participle must take the matching locative ending 'предложеним', not nominative 'предложени'. Note also that agent phrases like 'од стране...' are avoided in natural Serbian.
Using an invariant verbal adverb (-ући) to modify a noun directly
Видим човека трчећи кроз парк.Видим човека који трчи кроз парк.The verbal adverb 'трчећи' modifies the main predicate and must share its subject. It cannot function as an adnominal modifier for an object; use a finite relative clause with 'који'.
How It Connects
Learn This First
Condensed participial constructions compress relative or adverbial clauses into rich participial noun modifiers. Learners must first understand standard relative clauses (using 'који'), passive participle morphology (-н/-т), and how adjectives and participles take case complements.
- којиRelative Clauses
Understanding how relative clauses describe nouns is necessary because condensed participial constructions functionally compress full relative clauses into compact adjectival/participial phrases.
Level 3 - -н / -тPassive Participle Formation
Condensed participial structures frequently rely on passive verbal adjectives (-н, -т) acting as complex noun modifiers.
Level 4 - Adjectives With Case Complements
Participles functioning as condensed modifiers inherit verbal and adjectival complementation, governing specific case arguments and prepositional phrases within the noun phrase.
