Leaving Out Recoverable Words
Ellipsis is the natural omission of words that are easily recovered from context. Instead of repeating verbs or whole phrases across coordinated clauses or in dialogue answers, Serbian leaves them out while strictly preserving the grammatical cases governed by the missing verb.
How It Works
Ellipsis (елипса) is an essential feature of authentic, fluent Serbian. Repeating complete sentence structures in everyday dialogue sounds stiff or defensive, while coordinated ellipsis prevents needless repetition.
1. Gapping in Coordinated Clauses (Глаголско избијање)
When two independent clauses share the same predicate, the verb is omitted in the second clause. This gapping is canonically licensed by the oppositive conjunction а:
- Јован студира медицину, а његова сестра права. (The verb студира is elided; права remains in the accusative plural). Note that adversative али does not naturally license this kind of bare verbal gapping (*Јован пије пиво, али Соња вино).
- In compound tenses like перфекат, standard gapping requires omitting the entire verbal complex—both the auxiliary clitic and the participle together: Ми смо гледали филм, а они утакмицу. Leaving a stranded auxiliary clitic (*они су утакмицу) is ungrammatical.
2. Dialogue Answer Ellipsis and Case Government (Рекција)
Wh-questions probe specific sentence roles. The natural answer supplies only the rheme (the focus constituent), but the invisible governing verb still strictly dictates its case morphology and prepositions:
- — О чему размишљаш? — О испиту. (Locative governed by elided размишљам о...; prepositions can never be dropped in Serbian fragment answers: *Испиту is ungrammatical).
- — Коме си послао поруку? — Марку. (Dative governed by elided послао сам...).
3. The Clitic Constraint in Short Answers
Serbian clitics cannot stand in absolute sentence-initial position (Wackernagel rule). When answering a yes/no question using just an auxiliary verb, you must use the full tonic form or the fused negative verb, never a bare clitic:
- — Да ли си видео ово? — Јесам. / Нисам. (Never: *Сам; see нисам).
- — Хоћеш ли доћи? — Хоћу. / Нећу.
Examples (5)
- Јован воли чај, а Милан кафу.
Jovan likes tea, and Milan [likes] coffee.
Word by Word: Jovan likes tea, and Milan coffee.
The verb 'воли' is omitted in the second clause. 'Кафу' preserves the accusative singular feminine ending required by 'волети'.
- — Коме си дао кључеве? — Комшији.
— Who did you give the keys to? — [I gave the keys to] The neighbor.
Word by Word: — Whom-DAT did-you give keys? — Neighbor-DAT.
The response is a fragment, but 'комшији' must be in the dative singular because the elided verb is 'дати'.
- — О чему сте разговарали? — О новом пројекту.
— What were you talking about? — [We were talking] About the new project.
Word by Word: — About what-LOC did-you speak? — About new project-LOC.
The prepositional phrase stays in the locative case governed by the omitted verb phrase 'разговарали смо о'.
- Милан је стигао на време, али не и Петар.
Milan arrived on time, but Petar [did not arrive on time].
Word by Word: Milan AUX arrived on time, but not and Petar.
Stripping ellipsis: the repeated predicate is elided after the contrastive conjunction 'али' and focus particle 'не и'.
- — Шта читаш? — Занимљиву књигу.
— What are you reading? — [I am reading] An interesting book.
Word by Word: — What read-you? — Interesting book-ACC.
A full sentence would sound pedantic. The fragment correctly uses the accusative singular.
Common Mistakes
Defaulting to the nominative case in short answers instead of matching the governing verb's case.
— Шта пијеш? — Хладна вода.— Шта пијеш? — Хладну воду.Even though the verb 'пијем' is omitted, it still governs the accusative case ('хладну воду'), not the nominative.
Using an unaccented clitic alone to answer a polar question.
— Јеси ли купио хлеб? — Сам.— Јеси ли купио хлеб? — Јесам.Clitics cannot stand alone without a host. When answering with only the auxiliary verb, use the stressed full form 'јесам'.
Repeating the whole sentence in a short answer.
Different Meaning— Где си био јуче? — Ја сам био јуче у позоришту.— Где си био јуче? — У позоришту.A full sentence is correct, but in casual talk people give only the new information: 'У позоришту.'

Understanding ellipsis in answers and coordinated structures requires familiarity with basic clause-joining and answering conventions, the general principle of omitting recoverable information (pro-drop), and how information structure (topic vs. focus) determines which words can be safely left out.
