да + Present-Tense Verb, Conditional
Unreal Present Conditions
Да + imperfective present sets up a condition contrary to current facts ('If I had / If I were...'), while the main clause uses потенцијал to express the imagined consequence ('I would...').
How It Works
In Serbian, expressing present counterfactuals ('If I had...', 'If she knew...') does not use ако. Instead, one of the primary constructions is да + презент (alongside кад + потенцијал), combining a specific conjunction, tense, aspect, and mood.
1. Structure of the Condition (Protasis):
• Begins with the conjunction да.
• Followed by a verb in the present tense (презент).
• Crucial Aspect Rule: The verb must almost always be imperfective (несвршени вид). Using a perfective verb shifts the meaning from an unreal present state to an imagined future possibility.
2. Structure of the Consequence (Apodosis):
• Expressed with the conditional mood (потенцијал), formed using clitic auxiliary forms derived from the aorist of бити (бих, би, би, бисмо, бисте, би—note that the 3rd person plural conditional auxiliary uses би instead of the standard aorist form бише) together with the active past participle (радни глаголски придев).
3. Clause Order and Clitic Placement:
• The clauses are freely reversible:
- Condition first: Да имам времена, помогао бих ти. (A comma is required).
- Main clause first: Помогао бих ти да имам времена. (No comma needed; notice that using a non-declarative verb avoids any ambiguity with object clauses).
• Remember that conditional auxiliaries (бих, би...) are clitics and cannot start a sentence. In main-clause-first order, lead with an accented word or participle: Купио бих... or Ја бих купио..., never *Бих купио....
Examples (4)
- Да имам више слободног времена, учио бих још један страни језик.
If I had more free time, I would learn another foreign language.
Word by Word: If I-have more free time, I-would learn yet one foreign language.
The imperfective verb 'имам' shows that the lack of time is a present fact; the apodosis uses 'учио бих' to show the hypothetical outcome.
- Да живимо ближе центру града, све би нам било много лакше.
If we lived closer to the city center, everything would be much easier for us.
Word by Word: If we-live closer to-center of-city, all would to-us be much easier.
The condition 'да живимо' is contrary to the current place of residence.
- Не бих радио овај посао да морам да путујем сваки дан.
I wouldn't do this job if I had to commute every day.
Word by Word: Not would-I do this job if I-must that I-travel every day.
Here the main clause comes first with the negative conditional 'не бих радио', followed by the condition without a comma.
- Да знам где се налази та књижара, радо бих ти показао пут.
If I knew where that bookstore was, I would gladly show you the way.
Word by Word: If I-know where itself locates that bookstore, gladly would-I to-you show way.
'Да знам' indicates that the speaker currently does not know the location.
Common Mistakes
Using "ако" for an unreal present condition.
Different MeaningАко имам новца сада, купио бих нови аутомобил.Да имам новца сада, купио бих нови аутомобил."Ако имам новца сада, купио бих..." is correct, but it treats having the money as a real possibility. For a condition contrary to fact, use "да": "Да имам новца сада".
Using 'потенцијал' in both the 'да' clause and the main clause.
Да бих имао времена, ишао бих у позориште.Да имам времена, ишао бих у позориште.Unlike English ('If I had...') or conditional structures introduced by 'кад', the conjunction 'да' in this pattern requires the indicative present tense, not 'потенцијал'.
Placing the conditional auxiliary clitic at the very start of the main clause.
Да знам истину, бих ти рекао.Да знам истину, рекао бих ти.Clitics like 'бих' cannot stand first in a clause. The active participle ('рекао') or a full pronoun ('ја') must precede the clitic.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To express unreal present conditions ('да + презент; потенцијал', e.g., 'Да имам новца, купио бих стан'), you need to learn present tense conjugations for the condition clause and the potential mood (потенцијал) for the hypothetical consequence, along with basic knowledge of conditional sentence frames.
