будем ли / буде ли
Conditions with Li
The enclitic particle ли can act as a conditional subordinator when attached directly to the first verb of a clause. When paired with forms of бити (such as будем ли, буде ли), it introduces real conditions equivalent to 'ако буде...'. In everyday speech, it strongly signals warnings, ultimatums, or categorical promises, whereas in formal writing it introduces legal or official stipulations.
How It Works
Although learners initially encounter ли as a question marker in да ли; ли, standard Serbian syntax also treats ли as a subordinating conditional conjunction (uslovni veznik).
1. Construction and Tense Restrictions
As an unaccented clitic, ли must immediately follow the first syntactically stressed word of its clause. In conditional clauses, this host word must be the finite verb. Crucially, this construction is restricted to real present or future conditions—it accepts only the present tense and футур II: будем + радни глаголски придев. Past tenses (such as перфекат) and conditionals (потенцијал) cannot form conditional clauses with ли:
- Copula / Existential: Буде ли проблема... (Should there be problems...)
- Compound Futur II: Будеш ли закаснио... (If / Should you be late...)
- Finite Present-Tense Verbs: Depending on verb aspect, these can refer to present or future conditions. Imperfective verbs denote present conditions (e.g., Имаш ли времена, помози ми. = If you have time, help me), whereas perfective verbs denote future, prospective conditions (e.g., Сазнам ли истину, јавићу ти. = If I find out the truth, I will let you know).
2. Negation
The negative particle (одрична речца) не acts as a proclitic that carries the stress together with бити (не будем, не буде). The enclitic ли follows directly after this verbal unit:
- Не буде ли договора... (If there is no agreement...)
- Не будеш ли учио... (If you don't study...)
3. Pragmatic Nuance and Register
While semantically equivalent to ако буде..., fronting the verb with ли changes the stylistic color:
- Colloquial use: Primarily pragmatic warnings, threats, or stern promises (e.g., Будеш ли то урадио, видећеш!).
- Formal / Administrative use: Common in news reports, contractual clauses, and legislative texts (e.g., Буде ли закон усвојен...).
4. Key Distinctions and Punctuation
Do not confuse this construction with interrogatives. In conditional clauses, a comma is placed when the subordinate clause precedes the main clause (e.g., Буде ли кише, остаћемо код куће), but the comma is normally omitted when the conditional clause follows the main clause (e.g., Остаћемо код куће буде ли кише). Crucially, the compound interrogative marker да ли can never be used conditionally.
Examples (4)
- Буде ли сутра падала киша, одложићемо излет.
If it rains tomorrow, we will postpone the trip.
Word by Word: Be-shall whether tomorrow fallen rain, postpone-will-we excursion.
Here, 'буде ли' pairs with the active participle 'падала' to form an open future condition.
- Будеш ли још једном закаснио, изгубићеш посао.
Should you be late once more, you will lose your job.
Word by Word: Be-shalt whether yet once late-been, lose-will-thou job.
In spoken communication, this pattern frequently functions as a direct warning or ultimatum.
- Не буде ли договора на састанку, штрајк почиње сутра.
If there is no agreement at the meeting, the strike begins tomorrow.
Word by Word: Not be-shall whether agreement-genitive on meeting, strike begins tomorrow.
Demonstrates negation: the particle 'ли' immediately follows the negative auxiliary 'не буде'.
- Буде ли све у реду, стижемо око пет сати.
If everything is alright, we arrive around five o'clock.
Word by Word: Be-shall whether all in order, arrive-we around five hours.
Shows 'буде' functioning as a copula rather than an auxiliary with a past participle.
Common Mistakes
Using 'да ли' to start a conditional sentence instead of an interrogative sentence.
Да ли буде падала киша, остаћемо код куће.Буде ли падала киша, остаћемо код куће.'Да ли' can exclusively form questions. To state a condition, use 'буде ли' (or 'ако буде'), never 'да ли'.
Placing another constituent before the finite verb and 'ли'.
Сутра буде ли падала киша, остаћемо код куће.Буде ли сутра падала киша, остаћемо код куће.The conditional construction requires the finite verb to host 'ли' as the first element of the clause.
Attaching 'ли' to the active participle instead of the finite auxiliary.
Падала ли буде киша, остаћемо код куће.Буде ли падала киша, остаћемо код куће.In compound verb forms, the enclitic 'ли' must attach to the conjugated auxiliary 'будем/буде', not the participle.
How It Connects
Learn This First
The pattern 'будем ли / буде ли' expresses a potential condition (equivalent to 'ако будем / буде...'). Understanding it requires a good grasp of the perfective present forms of 'бити', the enclitic question particle 'ли', and basic conditional structures in Serbian.
- будем / будешPerfective Present of Be
Learners need to know the perfective present forms of 'бити' ('будем', 'будеш', 'буде', etc.) which serve as the verbal core of this conditional pattern.
Level 3 - ако + Present-Tense VerbOpen Conditions
Learners must already understand standard open conditional clauses ('ако...') to recognize how 'будем/буде ли' expresses an equivalent conditional function rather than a literal question.

Related Patterns
- будем + Active ParticipleFuture in Subordinate Clauses
Supplies the verbal base ('будем/буде' + participle) used in temporal and conditional dependent clauses.
Level 3 - да ли / лиYes or No Questions
Contrasts the interrogative clitic function of 'ли' with its subordinating conditional function.
Level 1 - не би лиHoping to Achieve Something
Uses 'бити' with 'ли' in the potential mood to express purpose ('in order to', 'hoping to') rather than a condition.
