Plural-Only Nouns

Level 3Sounds Like imenice samo u množini

Plural-only nouns (pluralia tantum) exist exclusively in the plural form. Even when referring to just one item—like 'one door' (врата) or 'one pair of scissors' (маказе)—they always take plural adjectives, plural verbs, and special numeral adjectives for counting.

How It Works

In Serbian, nouns that possess only plural forms are known as именице само у множини (pluralia tantum). Alongside objects composed of paired halves or complex multipart structures (like clothing and tools), this category also regularly includes proper place names and mountain ranges (Карловци, Алпи), illnesses (богиње), traditional holidays and rituals (задушнице, покладе), and publications or collections of writings (новине, скрипта, мемоари).

1. Agreement Rules
Verbs and adjectives must always agree with the noun's grammatical plural gender and plural number:
• Masculine: Сремски Карловци су били прелепи. (Sremski Karlovci was beautiful.) / Мемоари су објављени. (The memoirs have been published.)
• Neuter: Ова врата су била отворена. (This door was open.)
• Feminine: Маказе су биле оштре. (The scissors were sharp.)
Never treat neuter plural nouns ending in -а (like врата or кола) as feminine singulars.

2. How to Count Plural-Only Nouns
Standard cardinal numbers like два, три, четири cannot directly quantify these nouns. Instead, use the following systems:
• For 1 item: Use the plural form of the number један matching the noun's gender:
- Masculine: једни мемоари (one collection of memoirs)
- Neuter: једна врата (one door)
- Feminine: једне панталоне (one pair of pants)
• For 2, 3, and 4: You must use numeral adjectives (бројни придеви: двоји/двоје/двоја, троји/троје/троја, четвори/четворе/четвора). They decline and agree with the plural gender of the noun:
- Masculine: двоји мемоари (two collections of memoirs), троји ногари (three sets of trestles)
- Neuter: двоја врата (two doors), троја кола (three cars)
- Feminine: двоје маказе (two pairs of scissors), троје панталоне (three pairs of pants)
- Case inflection and modern usage: Historically and in formal grammar, numeral adjectives decline through oblique cases (e.g., genitive: испред двојих врата; instrumental: са двојим маказама). However, because these inflected oblique forms feel heavy and cumbersome to modern ears, native speakers typically avoid them altogether by rephrasing, often using collective expressions or measure words like пар (e.g., са два пара маказа). Simply leaving numeral adjectives uninflected in the nominative after prepositions is considered ungrammatical.
• For 5 and above: While numeral adjectives exist (петора, шестора), modern standard Serbian predominantly and naturally uses standard cardinal numbers governing the genitive plural (пет врата, шест кола, десет маказа).
• Periphrastic construction with 'пар': For bipartite items such as clothing and tools, native speakers very frequently count with пар (pair) plus the genitive plural: два пара панталона, три пара маказа.

3. Plural-Only Nouns vs. Collective Nouns
Do not confuse pluralia tantum with collective nouns (збирне именице). Prototypical collective nouns like лишће (leaves) or цвеће (flowers) designate a plural quantity of items while functioning syntactically as singular mass nouns with singular verbs (Лишће опада). Even suppletive collective plurals such as деца and браћа morphologically decline as feminine singulars (though taking plural verbs). In contrast, plural-only nouns are genuinely plural across all cases, inflections, and agreements; their base plural form denotes a single discrete item or unit without requiring plural quantity, but can fully express multiple items when quantified.

Common Mistakes

  • Treating neuter plural nouns ending in -а as feminine singular nouns.

Ова врата је била отворена целу ноћ.
Ова врата су била отворена целу ноћ.

Because 'врата' ends in '-а', learners often confuse it with feminine singular words like 'жена'. However, 'врата' is neuter plural and requires plural verbs and participles ('су била').

  • Using ordinary cardinal numbers (два, три) directly before plural-only nouns.

Купио сам два панталоне и три врата.
Купио сам двоје панталоне и троја врата.

Ordinary cardinal numbers cannot directly count plural-only nouns. You must use numeral adjectives ('двоје' for feminine, 'троја' for neuter) or counting phrases like 'два пара панталона'.

  • Using the wrong gender ending on numeral adjectives.

Потребна су ми двоје врата за собу.
Потребна су ми двоја врата за собу.

Numeral adjectives decline for gender: neuter plural takes '-а' ('двоја врата'), while feminine plural takes '-е' ('двоје маказе').
