-у/-ю (предложный)

Prepositional-case Locative Variant in -у or -ю

Level 6Sounds Like predložnyj variant na -u/-û

While most masculine nouns end in -е in the prepositional case, a specific group of about 100-150 nouns uses a stressed -у or -ю ending when indicating location (where?) after the prepositions 'в' (in) or 'на' (on).

How It Works

In Russian, the Prepositional location after в and на usually ends in -е for masculine nouns. However, a relic of Old Russian persists in a closed set of nouns, which consists entirely of inanimate objects. This is often called the Second Prepositional or Locative Case.

1. The Location vs. Topic Distinction
This is the most critical rule to become proficient in. The -у/-ю ending is used for location, time, or figurative states after the prepositions в and на. If you are talking about the noun (the topic), you must use the standard -е ending, usually after о/об.

  • в лесу (in the forest - location)
  • о лесе (about the forest - topic)

2. Location vs. Direction
It is crucial to distinguish between location and direction. The -у/-ю ending is NEVER used for direction. When expressing direction (where to), you must use the Accusative destination after в and на. Since these are inanimate masculine nouns, their accusative form is identical to the nominative.

  • Я иду в лес (into the forest - direction, not в лесу)
  • Я гуляю в лесу (in the forest - location)

3. Singular Only and the 'При' Rule

  • Singular Only: The -у/-ю locative ending applies only to the singular form. In the plural, these nouns revert to the standard prepositional endings (e.g., в лесах, not в лесу).
  • The 'При' Rule: The locative case is strictly triggered by в and на. With the preposition при (meaning 'near' or 'in the time of'), you must almost always use the standard -е ending (e.g., при мосте), with rare lexicalized exceptions like при полку.

4. Morphological Features & Limits

  • Stress and Dative Overlap: The locative ending is always stressed (в саду, на берегу). If the stress stays on the stem, it is not the locative form. You will also encounter the -у/-ю ending on these same nouns in the Dative case (e.g., after к or по). While many common nouns have a stem-stressed Dative form (contrasting the end-stressed Locative в лесу with the stem-stressed Dative по лесу), this is only a helpful guideline. Some nouns have end-stressed Dative forms as well (e.g., по мосту, по льду), making them identical to the Locative.
  • Declension Limits: The -у/-ю locative ending applies exclusively to masculine nouns (2nd declension). It is never used for neuter or feminine nouns.
  • Adjective Agreement: Adjectives do not follow this pattern. They use the standard adjective agreement in oblique cases (-ом/-ем). Example: в тёмном лесу.
  • Feminine Nouns: The broader locative phenomenon includes a small group of feminine 3rd-declension nouns that shift stress to the ending -и (e.g., в тени, в крови, в печи, в степи).

5. Meaning-Based Doublets, Styles & Titles

  • Literal vs. Abstract: Sometimes the ending distinguishes meaning. For example, на углу (on the physical corner) vs. в угле (in the mathematical angle or in coal); в ряду (in a physical row) vs. в ряде (in a series of).
  • Stylistic and Colloquial Variations: For some words, the -у/-ю ending is optional or stylistic. For example, the standard form is в отпуске (on vacation), but you might hear the colloquial в отпуску. Another example is на счёте (in a bank account) versus the idiomatic на хорошем счету (in good standing).
  • Proper Nouns/Titles: Titles of works always take the standard -е ending. Compare в лесу (in the forest) with в «Лесе» (in the play "The Forest").

6. Common Nouns and Fixed Prepositions:
It is important to memorize which preposition (в or на) goes with which noun, as they cannot be mixed and matched.

  • в: лесу (forest), саду (garden), носу (nose), шкафу (cupboard), аэропорту (airport), быту (daily life), строю (formation/rank), долгу (in debt).
  • на: полу (floor), мосту (bridge), берегу (shore), краю (edge), борту (board/ship), ходу (on the move).
  • Time: в прошлом году (last year).

Examples (6)

  1. Мы весь день гуляли в лесу.

We walked in the forest all day.

Word by Word: We all day walked in forest.

Here, 'лес' takes the -у ending because it indicates a physical location after the preposition 'в'.

  2. Биолог написал интересную статью о лесе.

The biologist wrote an interesting article about the forest.

Word by Word: Biologist wrote interesting article about forest.

Even though 'лес' is one of the special nouns, we use the standard -е ending here because the forest is the 'topic' of the article (after 'о').

  3. В прошлом году я часто бывал в аэропорту.

Last year I was often at the airport.

Word by Word: In past year I often was in airport.

Both 'год' (time) and 'аэропорт' (location) use the stressed -у ending in this context.

  4. Книга лежит на полке, а не на полу.

The book is lying on the shelf, not on the floor.

Word by Word: Book lies on shelf, but not on floor.

Contrast: 'полка' is feminine and follows standard rules, while 'пол' (floor) is a masculine noun that requires the locative -у.

  5. Он стоял на самом краю моста.

He was standing on the very edge of the bridge.

Word by Word: He stood on very edge of bridge.

The noun 'край' (edge) takes the -ю ending for location. Note that the adjective 'самый' keeps the standard prepositional ending.

  6. В этих лесах водится много медведей.

There are many bears in these forests.

Word by Word: In these forests is found many bears.

In the plural, the locative -у/-ю ending is not used. The noun reverts to the standard plural prepositional ending -ах.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the -у ending for the topic of a conversation.

    Мы говорили о лесу.
    Мы говорили о лесе.

The -у ending is for location, time, or state. When using the preposition 'о' (about) to indicate a topic, you must return to the standard -е ending.

  • Applying the -у ending to all masculine nouns.

    Я был в театру.
    Я был в театре.

This is not a general rule for all masculine nouns; it is a closed set of exceptions. Nouns like 'театр' or 'парк' always take -е.

  • Using the -у ending with the preposition 'при' or in the plural.

    Они стояли при мосту.
    Они стояли при мосте.

The locative -у ending is strictly triggered by the prepositions 'в' and 'на' in the singular. When using 'при' (with rare lexicalized exceptions like 'при полку') or when the noun is plural, you must use the standard prepositional endings.
