Comparative with genitive standard
Use the simple comparative (e.g., быстрее, выше) followed directly by a noun or pronoun in the Genitive case to say 'than [something]'.
How It Works
The Genitive comparison is a powerful tool for building natural-sounding Russian sentences.
1. How to form it:
Take any simple comparative adjective or adverb (including regular forms like быстрее and irregular ones like лучше or выше) and follow it with the object of comparison in the Genitive case (родительный сравнения). No comma is needed.
2. When to use it:
- It is most common when the first item being compared is in the Nominative or Accusative case.
- It works best with simple nouns and pronouns (e.g., 'taller than me', 'older than the house').
- It is considered neutral and is used in both formal writing and casual conversation.
3. The Superlative Shortcut:
A very common use of this pattern is to create a superlative meaning by using the Genitive forms всех (everyone) or всего (everything). For example: лучше всех (best of all) or дороже всего (most expensive of all).
4. Key Restrictions:
- You cannot use this with the analytic comparative (более/менее). You must use чем in those cases.
- If you are comparing complex phrases (like prepositional phrases or whole clauses), you must use comparison with чем.
- If the first item is in the Dative, Instrumental, or Prepositional case, use чем to maintain clarity and parallel structure.
Examples (5)
- Москва больше Петербурга.
Moscow is bigger than Petersburg.
Word by Word: Moscow bigger Petersburg(Genitive).
A classic comparison of two cities using the Genitive case for the second city.
- Этот фильм интереснее предыдущего.
This movie is more interesting than the previous one.
Word by Word: This movie more-interesting previous(Genitive).
The adjective 'предыдущий' (previous) is put into the Genitive case to act as the standard of comparison.
- Он пришёл раньше меня.
He arrived earlier than me.
Word by Word: He arrived earlier me(Genitive).
Personal pronouns are very frequently used in the Genitive case for comparison.
- Твоя сумка тяжелее моей.
Your bag is heavier than mine.
Word by Word: Your bag heavier mine(Genitive).
Possessive pronouns also take the Genitive case in this construction.
- Брат выше сестры.
The brother is taller than the sister.
Word by Word: Brother taller sister(Genitive).
A simple comparison of two people's height.
Common Mistakes
Using the Genitive case with 'более' (more).
Он более высокий брата.Он выше брата.The Genitive construction only works with simple (one-word) comparatives like 'выше'. If you use 'более', you must use 'чем'.
Using the Genitive case to compare actions (clauses).
Он поёт лучше меня танцую.Он поёт лучше, чем я танцую.The Genitive case can only be used for nouns or pronouns. If you are comparing two different actions, you must use 'чем'.
Omitting 'чем' when comparing prepositional phrases.
В Москве холоднее Лондона.В Москве холоднее, чем в Лондоне.The incorrect example literally says Moscow is colder than the city of London itself. To compare the weather 'in' both places, you need the parallel prepositional structure with 'чем'.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To use the comparative with a genitive standard, a learner must already know how to form simple comparative adjectives (like 'старше' or 'выше') and be comfortable with the endings of the genitive case. It is also helpful to understand the standard comparison construction using 'чем' to recognize this as a more concise alternative.
- Genitive of possession or association
Understanding the basic form and function of the genitive case is necessary to apply it as a comparison standard.

This pattern is the primary alternative to the genitive construction; understanding how comparisons work conceptually in Russian is a prerequisite for learning this stylistic variant.
