-ние/-тие + Genitive

Verbal Noun with Genitive Object

Level 5Sounds Like otglagolʹnoe suŝestvitelʹnoe na -nie/-tie

Verbal nouns (deverbals) ending in -ние or -тие allow you to treat an action as a concept. Crucially, the direct object of the verb must change from the accusative to the genitive case.

How It Works

Verbal nouns are essential for academic, legal, and official Russian. While verbal nouns formed with zero-suffixation can be masculine or feminine (e.g., бег (running), встреча (meeting)), those ending in -ние/-тие are neuter and follow the -ие declension pattern.

1. Formation:

  • -ние / -ение: The most common suffixes. While some base verbs in -ать take -ание (e.g., требовать → требование (demand)), nouns ending in -ение are derived from verbs ending in -ить or -еть, as well as verbs ending in a consonant + -ти, -чь, -сть (e.g., спасти → спасение (salvation)). They can be formed from both perfective and imperfective verbs (e.g., курить → курение (smoking), изучить → изучение (study)). They are often built on the stem of the past passive participle. Note: Many common verbs use zero-suffixation instead of -ние (e.g., рассказывать → рассказ (story/telling), переводить → перевод (translation)). Verbs in -ить often undergo consonant mutations (e.g., обсудить → обсуждение (discussion)). Note that the stress can shift. As a helpful spelling heuristic for learners, if the past passive participle contains the letter ё, it corresponds to е in the verbal noun (e.g., решённый → решение (decision), суждённый → суждение (judgment)), because the verbal noun suffix -ени(е) never contains ё.
  • -тие: Used for specific stems, primarily monosyllabic roots (e.g., открыть → открытие (discovery/opening), развить → развитие (development)).
  • Variants: You may also encounter the -ьё variant (e.g., житьё (living), враньё (lies)) and the stylistic difference between formal -ние and colloquial or poetic -нье (e.g., пение vs. пенье (singing)). Note the spelling rule for the prepositional case: the prepositional ending for -ие nouns is -и (resulting in -ии, e.g., о пении), whereas for -ье nouns it is -е (resulting in -ье, e.g., о пенье).
  • Reflexive Verbs: The суффикс -ся is always dropped (e.g., сопротивляться → сопротивление (resistance)).

2. Syntactic Governance:

  • The Object: The most important rule is the genitive object. While a verb like изучать takes an accusative direct object, the noun изучение requires the genitive case.
  • The Subject of Intransitive Verbs: For intransitive verbs, the subject of the action is expressed using the genitive case (e.g., пение птиц (the singing of birds)).
  • The Agent: To express who is performing the action of a transitive verb, use the instrumental case (e.g., изучение языка студентом (the studying of the language by the student)). This is especially important when a verbal noun has both a subject and an object. To avoid the ambiguity of having two genitives, the subject MUST take the instrumental case while the object takes the genitive.
  • Prepositions: If the original verb requires a specific preposition for its indirect object, the verbal noun usually retains it (e.g., участвовать в проекте → участие в проекте (participation in a project)).
  • Modifiers: When a verb becomes a noun, modifying adverbs must become adjectives (e.g., внимательно изучать → внимательное изучение (careful studying)).
  • Genitive Ambiguity: When there is only one noun in the genitive following the verbal noun, it can be ambiguous whether it is the subject or the object (e.g., приглашение брата could mean 'the invitation of the brother' or 'the brother's invitation'). Context is required to clarify.

3. Usage and Aspect:
These nouns are common in formal writing. They are frequently used with temporal prepositions like после (after) or до (before) to describe sequences of events. In formal Russian, they are heavily used with these prepositions to replace clunky subordinate clauses (e.g., writing После прочтения книги... (After reading the book...) instead of После того как я прочитал книгу... (After I read the book...)). Verbal nouns generally lack strict morphological aspect and often rely on context to express process versus result. For example, решение (decision/solving) serves as the verbal noun for both решать (imperfective process) and решить (perfective result). While these nouns denote abstract processes and are typically singular-only (e.g., изучение), many have lexicalized into concrete nouns that can be pluralized (e.g., требование = the act of demanding; требования = the specific demands).

Examples (4)

  1. Подписание мирного договора состоялось вчера.

The signing of the peace treaty took place yesterday.

Word by Word: Signing [of] peace treaty took place yesterday.

Here, the verb 'подписать' (to sign) becomes the noun 'подписание'. The object 'мирный договор' moves from accusative to genitive.

  2. Мы ждём принятия окончательного решения.

We are waiting for the adoption of the final decision.

Word by Word: We wait [for] adoption [of] final decision.

The noun 'принятие' (adoption/taking) comes from 'принять'. The object 'решение' is in the genitive case.

  3. После обсуждения проекта мы пойдём домой.

After the discussion of the project, we will go home.

Word by Word: After discussion [of] project we will go home.

Using a verbal noun with 'после' is a standard way to express 'after doing something' in formal Russian.

  4. Развитие экономики — наш главный приоритет.

The development of the economy is our main priority.

Word by Word: Development [of] economy — our main priority.

'Развитие' is a verbal noun ending in -тие, governing the genitive 'экономики'.

Common Mistakes

  • Keeping the object in the accusative case.

    изучение проблему
    изучение проблемы

Learners often forget that once a verb becomes a noun, it can no longer take a direct accusative object; it must govern the genitive.

  • Treating the noun as feminine.

    важная решение
    важное решение

Nouns ending in -ие are neuter, not feminine. They should not be confused with feminine nouns ending in -ия.
