Imperfective aspect for repeated action

Level 2Sounds Like nesoveršennyj vid povtorâemosti

In Russian, if an action happens more than once—whether it's a daily habit, a frequent occurrence, or even something that never happens—you must use the Imperfective aspect (NSV). This rule applies even if the action was completed each time.

How It Works

The несовершенный вид повторяемости (Imperfective of repetition) is one of the most common reasons to choose an Imperfective verb.

1. When to use it:

  • Habits and Routines: Actions you do every day, every week, or usually.
  • Frequent Actions: Actions that happen often or sometimes.
  • Zero Frequency: Actions that never happen, using negation with 'never'.
  • Discontinued Habits: Actions you used to do but do not do anymore, using 'no longer' (e.g., 'Я больше не курю').

2. Common Signal Words:
This pattern is almost always triggered by frequency adverbs such as:

  • всегда (always)
  • обычно (usually)
  • часто (often)
  • иногда (sometimes)
  • редко (rarely)
  • никогда не (never)
  • больше не (no longer / not anymore)
  • каждый день / год (every day / year)

3. The Present Tense Rule:
In the present tense, habitual or repeated actions are generally Imperfective because the Perfective aspect has no present tense. However, the Perfective future form can sometimes be used to describe vivid, recurring present sequences (e.g., 'Иногда он придёт, посидит немного и уйдёт').

4. Chains of Repeated Actions:
When describing a sequence of actions that repeated regularly in the past (e.g., 'Every evening I would read, then eat, then sleep'), you generally use a chain of Imperfective verbs. However, in vivid storytelling, past habitual sequences can sometimes use the Perfective future (or present) tense, often with 'бывало' (e.g., 'Бывало, он скажет...').

5. Repeated Commands:
If you are telling someone to do something regularly or as a habit (e.g., 'Always wash your hands'), you must use the Imperfective imperative.

6. Verbs of Motion:
When expressing repeated round trips or general habits involving movement, you should use the multi-directional imperfective stem (like ходить or ездить). The uni-directional stem (like идти) is used for habits when focusing on the process during a specific segment of a journey, such as in 'whenever' clauses (e.g., 'Каждый день, когда я иду на работу...').

7. Secondary Imperfectives:
When you add a prefix to a basic imperfective verb, it usually becomes perfective. To talk about repeated actions with these prefixed verbs, you must form a 'secondary imperfective' by adding specific suffixes like -ыва- / -ива- (e.g., записывать), -ва- (e.g., заболевать), or -а- (e.g., спасать).

8. 'Never' in Past vs. Future:
While 'никогда не' takes the Imperfective in the past for general experience, it often takes the Perfective in the future for a strong promise (e.g., 'Я никогда этого не сделаю'). Additionally, 'никогда не' can take the Perfective in the past for a single failed result or missed opportunity (e.g., 'Он так никогда и не узнал').

9. Exception: Repeated Sequences with 'Каждый раз, когда':
While repetition usually requires the Imperfective, if you describe a repeated sequence where one action must be completely finished before the next begins, the completed action often uses the Perfective aspect. For example: 'Каждый раз, когда я прочитаю книгу, я отдаю её другу' (Every time I finish reading a book, I give it to a friend).

10. Exception: Exact Number of Repetitions:
When an action is repeated a specific, counted number of times and you are summing up the completed result (e.g., 'два раза', 'три раза', 'несколько раз'), the Perfective aspect is used (e.g., 'Я прочитал эту книгу три раза').

Examples (5)

  1. Я обычно встаю в семь часов утра.

I usually get up at seven o'clock in the morning.

Word by Word: I usually get-up at seven hours morning.

The adverb 'обычно' (usually) indicates a habit, requiring the Imperfective verb 'вставать'.

  2. Раньше он часто писал мне письма.

He used to write me letters often.

Word by Word: Earlier he often wrote to-me letters.

Even though the letters were finished, the word 'часто' (often) triggers the Imperfective 'писать' in the past tense.

  3. Мы будем каждое лето ездить на море.

We will go to the seaside every summer.

Word by Word: We will every summer go to sea.

The phrase 'каждое лето' (every summer) indicates a repeated future action. In this context, we use the multi-directional verb 'ездить' within the compound imperfective future.

  4. Она никогда не опаздывает на работу.

She is never late for work.

Word by Word: She never not is-late to work.

Negation with 'никогда не' (never) describes a 'zero-frequency' habit, which requires the Imperfective.

  5. Каждый вечер я читал книгу.

Every evening I read a book.

Word by Word: Every evening I read book.

Using 'каждый вечер' (every evening) forces the Imperfective 'читать', even if the reading was completed each night.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the Perfective aspect with frequency adverbs like 'always'.

    Я всегда прочитал газету.
    Я всегда читал газету.

Learners often use the Perfective because they finished the newspaper. However, 'всегда' (always) requires the Imperfective читать.

  • Using the Perfective for 'never' in the past tense.

Я никогда не купил эту марку.
Я никогда не покупал эту марку.

When saying you 'never' did something as a general rule or habit in the past, you must use the Imperfective aspect. Note that in the future tense, 'never' can pair with the Perfective for a strong promise (e.g., 'Я никогда этого не забуду').

  • Using the Perfective for a sequence of repeated actions.

Каждый вечер я ужинал и посмотрел телевизор.
Каждый вечер я ужинал и смотрел телевизор.

When describing a chain of actions that repeated regularly (like a daily routine), all verbs in the sequence must be in the Imperfective aspect.

Learn This First

To understand the use of the imperfective aspect for repeated actions, a learner must first be familiar with basic Russian verb forms (infinitives) and the general concept of aspectual pairs (like делать/сделать). Additionally, since this function is often applied to past habits, knowledge of past tense conjugation is essential.
