если бы ... то
Counterfactual Condition with Если Бы
The construction если бы ... то is used for 'unreal' situations—things that didn't happen in the past or aren't true in the present. In Russian, both the 'if' clause and the 'result' clause use the past tense verb plus the particle бы.
How It Works
The counterfactual condition is one of the most important structures for advanced communication. It consists of two parts:
1. The Condition (If-clause): Starts with если бы or the shortened если б. Note that бы is the standard formal form; the shortened б is primarily colloquial or poetic and only occurs after vowels. This is usually followed by a verb in the past tense. While если бы is the standard and most common conjunction, когда бы (or когда б) can also be used, particularly in literature or elevated speech.
2. The Result (Then-clause): Includes another бы and a past tense verb. If the condition comes first, the result often starts with the particle то. However, if the result clause is placed at the beginning of the sentence, то must be omitted.
Key Rules:
- Verb Agreement: Because these constructions use the past tense, the verb must agree with the subject in gender and number (e.g., читал, читала, читали). This single pattern covers past, present, and future hypothetical situations (equivalent to both the 2nd and 3rd conditionals in English).
- Placement of бы: In the first clause, бы almost always follows если. In the result clause, its position is flexible, but it most naturally follows the subject pronoun or the verb.
- Aspect: Use the perfective aspect for specific, completed hypothetical results and the imperfective aspect for ongoing or habitual hypothetical states.
- The particle 'то': This acts as a bridge to the result only when the 'if' clause is first. While common in writing to organize long sentences, it is often dropped in casual speech.
- Punctuation: A comma must always separate the condition clause and the result clause, regardless of their order.
- Если бы не... (If it weren't for...): This structure uses если бы не. When followed by a noun or pronoun in the nominative case, the past-tense verb is dropped entirely to mean 'If it weren't for [noun]'. However, it is also used with verbs for standard negative conditions (e.g., Если бы он не пришёл...).
- With an Infinitive: Если бы can also be followed by an infinitive to express an impersonal, generalized, or wistful hypothetical condition (e.g., Если бы знать...).
- Spelling: Если бы is always written as two separate words. Never write it as one word (еслибы), which is a common mistake for learners who confuse it with чтобы.
Examples (4)
- Если бы у меня были деньги, я бы купил эту машину.
If I had the money, I would buy this car.
Word by Word: If [particle] at me were money, I [particle] bought this car.
A present counterfactual. Even though we are talking about a current lack of money, we use the past tense 'были' and 'купил'.
- Если бы ты позвонил вчера, мы бы встретились.
If you had called yesterday, we would have met.
Word by Word: If [particle] you called yesterday, we [particle] met.
A past counterfactual. The word 'вчера' (yesterday) tells us this refers to the past, but the verb forms remain the same as the present counterfactual.
- Если бы не дождь, мы бы пошли гулять.
If it weren't for the rain, we would go for a walk.
Word by Word: If [particle] not rain, we [particle] went to walk.
This uses the common 'Если бы не + Nominative' construction to say 'If it weren't for...'.
- Если бы я знал ответ, я бы тебе сказал.
If I knew the answer, I would tell you.
Word by Word: If [particle] I knew answer, I [particle] to you told.
Note how 'бы' appears in both the 'if' clause and the 'result' clause.
Common Mistakes
Using the present tense for present-time hypotheticals.
Если бы я знаю ответ, я бы сказал.Если бы я знал ответ, я бы сказал.In a counterfactual 'если бы' clause, the verb takes the past form. You cannot use the present tense 'знаю' there.
Forgetting the second 'бы' in the result clause.
Если бы у меня было время, я пришёл.Если бы у меня было время, я бы пришёл.Without the second 'бы', the sentence sounds like 'If I had time, I came.' The particle must be in both clauses to maintain the hypothetical mood.
Writing 'если бы' as a single word.
Еслибы я знал, я бы помог.Если бы я знал, я бы помог.Unlike 'чтобы', the conjunction 'если' and the particle 'бы' are always written as two separate words. Never write 'еслибы'.

Learn This First
To learn the counterfactual 'если бы ... то' pattern, you first need to understand how to form the past tense and how the particle 'бы' functions to create the conditional mood. It is also helpful to be familiar with basic real conditional sentences using 'если'.
