Clause Compression
Clause compression (contragerea propozițiilor) is a way to shorten sentences by replacing a full clause (conjunction + subject + verb) with a single non-finite verb form. It is primarily used in formal, academic, or literary Romanian to create a more concise and elegant style.
How It Works
Clause compression is a hallmark of advanced Romanian syntax. It reduces the 'weight' of a sentence by removing conjunctions like după ce (after) or deoarece (because).
1. Participial Compression (Anteriority)
In these constructions, an agreeing participle can present a completed or resulting state before the main event. Crucially, the participle must agree in gender and number with the noun it modifies.
Example: Odată terminată lucrarea, am plecat. (Once the work [was] finished, I left.)
2. Gerundial Compression (Simultaneity/Cause)
The gerund (ending in -ând/-ind) expresses actions happening at the same time as the main verb or the reason for the main action. Unlike the participle, it is invariable. In formal Romanian, you can negate it using the prefix ne-.
Example: Nefiind gata, nu a putut veni. (Not being ready, he couldn't come.)
3. Supine Compression (Purpose/Evaluation)
The supine (usually de + participle) replaces clauses expressing purpose or necessity.
Example: E greu de înțeles. (It is hard to understand.)
4. Infinitival Compression
Though less common than the să-subjunctive, the infinitive is used after specific prepositions like pentru a (in order to) or fără a (without).
Important Rule: The Subject
In adjunct constructions (where the non-finite verb modifies the main action), the 'hidden' subject must be the same as the main clause subject. However, Romanian also allows absolute constructions, where the participle or gerund has its own explicit subject: Plecând el, toți s-au întristat. (With him leaving, everyone became sad.)
A gerund is not limited to strict simultaneity. Depending on lexical meaning and context, Terminând lucrarea, am plecat can present finishing before leaving. Do not reject a gerund solely because the events are understood in sequence.
Examples (5)
- Terminată lecția, elevii au ieșit în curte.
The lesson [having been] finished, the students went out into the yard.
Word by Word: Finished lesson-the, students-the have gone-out in yard.
This uses a participial absolute construction. 'Terminată' (feminine singular) agrees with 'lecția'.
- Fiind bolnav, nu a putut veni la serviciu.
Being ill, he could not come to work.
Word by Word: Being ill, not has could come to service.
The gerund 'fiind' replaces a causal clause like 'Deoarece era bolnav' (Because he was ill).
- Acest text este greu de tradus.
This text is hard to translate.
Word by Word: This text is hard of translated.
The supine 'de tradus' compresses a clause expressing evaluation/possibility.
- A plecat fără a spune nimic.
He left without saying anything.
Word by Word: He-has left without to say nothing.
The infinitive 'a spune' is used after the preposition 'fără' to compress the sentence.
- Văzându-mă, a început să zâmbească.
Seeing me, he started to smile.
Word by Word: Seeing-u-me, has started to smile.
Văzându-mă uses the linking -u- before mă. Most attached gerund clitics use this linker, but feminine singular o is an exception: văzând-o.
Common Mistakes
Forgetting participle agreement in absolute constructions.
Terminat lecția, am plecat.Terminată lecția, am plecat. The participle functions like an adjective here and must agree with the noun 'lecția' (feminine singular).
Dangling gerund (subject mismatch) in adjunct clauses.
Mergând pe stradă, ploaia m-a udat.Mergând pe stradă, am fost udat de ploaie. When the gerund acts as a modifier without its own noun, its subject must match the main subject. In the incorrect version, it sounds like the rain was walking.
