باز است / باز شده است

State and Result

Level 4

در باز است. (state) ↔ در باز شده است. (completed change).

How It Works

Describe the state. In در باز است, باز is the predicate adjective and است is the copula. There is no lexical action verb saying that someone opened the door.

Describe the change. In در باز شد, شدن marks the door becoming open. در باز شده است presents that change as completed. It may explain the current state, but the clause’s structure differs from باز است.

Compare another adjective. سارا خسته است describes tiredness; سارا خسته شده است says she has become tired. Neither clause assigns a grammatical gender to the adjective.

Do not label every شدن passive. A lexical compound such as خسته شدن can describe a change in its own subject. A true passive such as نامه نوشته شد comes from a transitive writing event whose object is now the subject. Identify the roles before choosing the analysis.

Examples (4)

  1. در باز است.

    The door is open.

  2. در باز شده است.

    The door has opened.

This names a completed change, with no agent specified.

  3. سارا خسته است.

    Sara is tired.

  4. سارا خسته شده است.

    Sara has become tired.

This is a change of state, not automatically a passive.
